I was going to buy a simple cable that could plug my 3-pin fan to my motherboard PWM fan plug but I read PWM was transmitting some kind of signal/code. That made me think that perhaps there should be an adapter so the signal can be turned into the way 3-pin fan make the fan work, so that there should be an adapter. I guess there would be a--tiny--computer chip that would do the process, the kind of thing that look like a centipede, a black rectangle with perpendicular pins along its longest side.

What should I get to make my 3-pin fan work properly from a PWM fan pins output?

Thank you kindly

You have not told us exactly what mobo you have - maker and model. As a GENERAL rule, MOST mobos now use fan headers with 4 pins. BUT in BIOS Setup the you can go to the configuration options for each header separately and set an option, called the MODE, for whether that header behaves as a 4-pin PWM Mode one or as an older 3-pin Voltage Control Mode (aka DC Mode) one. If you set the header you are using for this 3-pin fan to DC Mode, it WILL control the fan speed properly. NO adapter needed.

If you need more exact help, tell us the mobo details so we can look up its manual and advise.

If you do not have the manual for your mobo, download it here:

To enter the BIOS Setup system for adjusting settings, start on p. 54. First step is: as soon as you turn on your system, hold down the "Del" key until the opening screen of Setup appears (p. 56). Do not merely tap that key. Now, use the top menu items to choose the H/W Monitor section - see p. 78. IF this 3-pin fan is used for cooling the CPU it should be plugged into the mobo CPU_FAN1 or CPU_FAN2 header, and that header's Switch setting should FAN, not PUMP. IF your fan is for case cooling, plug it into one of the CHA_FAN headers, and (if needed) set it to FAN, then ensure its Temperature Source is set to motherboard, not CPU. Whichever header you use, set Fan Setting to Standard, and set Control Mode to DC Mode, not PWM. When you have made all your settings, use Esc back to the Main Menu, then at upper right choose Exit - see p. 84. Choose Save Changes and Exit to exit Setup and reboot with your settings saved. This will ensure your 3-pin fan's speed IS controlled properly by the header with NO need for any other item.
