Hi i am thinking of building a rig for my friend and i was wondering which cpu should i go with. I already have with me a q6600 and a Athlon 760k but i do not know which one is better. Also the q6600 is paired with 4gb of ddr2, 760k paired with 2gb of ddr3 and either cpu will be used with a gts 250 powered by a 400w atx psu. So which one is better for gaming?

The Athlon x4 760K is better the reason is
-Newer 32nm process vs 65nm on the Intel.
-The Athlon x4 760K has integrated memory controller while the Q6600 uses the northbridge(IMC reside on the CPU reduces the access time and latency)
-And also the Q6600 probably doesn't even have SATA 3 and USB 3.0 support.

You should state your total BUDGET, because the 750K is about the only thing worth keeping. Even then, it might make more sense to just EBay those CPU's and start fresh.

One option is to go with an i3-6100, and use its iGPU until you can save up for a GTX750Ti or better. Choose appropriate game like Torchlight, Half Life 2 etc that can run smooth.

(If you use the 750K you have to add in the cost of a graphics card anyway)

Don't forget you need a new copy of Windows (i.e. Windows 10 Home 64-bit) so if you're expecting to build this for $200 or less you'll be disappointed.

these are just spare parts that i had so it was either the gts 250 or a ati 2400xt pro
And both my friends have these 2 cpus and the same gpu. They both agreed somehow that the q6600 was better paired with the gts 250

You're going to have to choose your games carefully with the GTS250.

Anyway, good luck. I don't think I'll be much help here.

Your post was not at all clear on this.

You said nothing about a motherboard, drives etc. Anyway, have fun, but please be a bit more clear next time.

The motherboard was sorta non relevant i was just needing info on the 2 cpu to pair with the gts 250 since i already have both motherboards and the hdd with a full copies of windows on it aswell

They are both wrong .
There are phones with more processing power than that ancient intel

I disagree with that, however I'd not get the 6600 due to the fact that its old and will develop incompatibilities and age wear and tear issues of old motherboards. I think using the 760k would be the wisest choice even if you have to sacrifice some raw gpu power to install a more modern gpu. You would need more than 2gb ram though, 4gig bare minimum, preferably 8.

Not the greatest comparison , but the intel is worse EVERYWHERE .
Its also OLD , second hand, and motherboards are also going to be in poor shape

An old motherboard does not automatically translate to poor shape. The last time I looked at my E8400's motherboard, it still looked good as new despite having been on 24/7 for most of the past eight years.

I know, i was more disagreeing in comparison to a phone cpu. Cpu's in phones are still not that powerful as the power source and battery life are critical.

I have had multiple socket 775 motherboards become problematic, random freezes and bsod's, but they're all nvidia chipset.... But if you want to install newer versions of windows, direct x etc, older chip-sets like that have no support. Even installing Steam OS is problematic.
