Q6600 running too hot?

I have a Q6600 processor (unOC'd) and it runs pretty hot. About 44-47 on idle and up to 60 at load. I want to overclock it as it might be bottlenecking by 4890 (20 fps in WoW, 20 fps in cs:source). Will I be able to overclock it to like 3.0 ghz without it melting?

You will need a better cooler. I suspect that most of the popular ones will not fit in the case though.

Cant see it as the bottleneck either,
I've got a Q6600 un oc'd with 8gb ddr800 and a 8800gtx. Happily runs any game i throw at it at max settings on a 22" widescreen monitor (1680x1050).
However the temp does seem high. Had mine clock'd to 3.6Ghz on a thermaltake heatsink + 120mm fan and never went over 58c full load. ran it like that for about a year.

Just adding my voice to the cpu not being the bottleneck. I've got a Q6600 with a 4870, and I'm getting way more FPS than that. A quick google suggest they might have skimped a little on the mobo, but I don't think it's anything catastrophic there. Did you get decent performance out of the 8500 before it died? If so, I would:

1) Make sure you've uninstalled everything correctly for the old nVidia card.
2) Make sure the catalyst drivers for the new card are up to date.
3) Check that your motherboard can support the card, and does not need a BIOS update.

I'd get the issues with your current rig sorted before overclocking, as you should be getting better performance than that. If you want to overclock, get your hands on an aftermarket cooler. There are quite a few out there that will fit the bill. I've got the Arctic 7 Freezer Pro, which is cheap, and keeps my Q6600 happy at 3.2. Let us know how you get on.

try running 3dmark06 and see what score you get with existing set up. 20 fps with wow sounds very wrong.

HP are notorious for cheap motherboards. I believe DeeTee is right about this being the problem.

OCing won't be a problem, but like jsc said, it might be hard to find a fan to fit the case.

I have a quad core CPU but it only detects 1 core. The system gets to 100% usage when I run games(even CS1.6) and I think this might be related to the problem. Im guessing maybe if I solve this problem first, I wont need to replace the heatsink.

Yeah, that's a problem. As rand_79 says, if you haven't changed that much, call HP. I suspect your BIOS is too old for the CPU, but they really ought not to have sold you a pc in that state.

you see, my warranty has expired ( never had one ) so If i were to call HP, i would have to pay their ridiculous fee ($40 per call have ur credit card ready ) to get help from them.

$40?!? Are you serious? Good lord. In that case, check the page for your board. Somewhere on there, it should say which revision of the BIOS is needed to run the Q6600. If your BIOS is earlier than that, update it. I would, personally, still be tempted to shout at HP for the fact that the system is not entirely "fit for purpose".

The BIOS is up to date. I ran 3dmark06 and got around 30 fps on 1280x1024 resolution(my 22" monitor supports 1680x1050). During the CPU test portion, the average fps was like 0-1 fps. I aborted the test after 10 minutes as it only got through 6 seconds of testing during that period. Can anyone offer a solution to getting the 4 cores in my processor to show up on my system again without going through the BIOS because the BIOS does not have anything that will help me with the problem

I had a BIOS problem with a HP PC myself. If you go to their website and find your PC you can get the new firmware.

No. Not necessary, because the stock heatsink and fan will fit and work ...

The motherboard is an IPIBL-LB. You cant do much on the bios, maybe set a password and change boot order and thats about it.

For your heat problem i would suggest finding the stable undervolt for your cpu. i undervolted my 955 BE and now my temps are idle: 28C Load: 41C. On stock voltages my temps were idle: 35C and load 50C

@kennh re your quad only showing one core.

Go to run in your start menu. Type in "msconfig". Go to the "Boot" tab and change the number of processors to 4. Restart your comp and the load cpu-z to see if you still only have one core showing up.
