Q9650 running at 2.67ghz can anyone help

Hello,
I have an nforce 780i motherboard and i just put in a q9650. the processor seems to be running at 2.67ghz. Im not sure why this is happening, i have set the motherboard to factory defaults but it still seems to be running slow. i went into the settings and it says that the multiplier is set to 8x which appears to be max, but it says that optimal is 9x. However, it wont let me change it. Could anyone help me to figure out why my processor is running so slow? I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. - I know nothing about overclocking, so if you could use detail when explaining I would really appreciate it.

How did you know that it is running at 2.67 GHz?

Have you got Speedstep enabled in the bios, this will speed up and slow down the cpu to save power.

Get cpu-z and Prime95 and run Prime 95 with cpu-z open.

Watch the cpu speed if it starts low then speeds up when Prime95 starts you are ok, should be 3ghz I think.

It seems to me that your bios/motherboard only allows a max multiplier of 8x. 333mhz time 8 = 2.67 if your bios let you select 9x as a cpu multiplier then 333mhz times 9 = 3.00ghz. you need a different motherboard or a bios upgrade from the motherboard website.. you can change your Front Side Bus FSB to 400mhz(a small overclock) times the 8x multiplier and that will make your cpu run at 3.2ghz. I have a Q9650 as well

The motherboard can support a higher multiplier. I have an EVGA 780i MB with the E8400, which is a 9x multiplier.

I would look into other variables. As others have mentioned, disable speedstep and see what happens.
