The QOTD is an article of curiosity. "Should we go back?" might have been a better one but I wouldn't come down on tom's for asking. Conspiracy theorists have been getting press lately, and I, myself, am curious as to what kind of person would deny such irrefutable evidence based on very little if any evidence.

If it was faked, the Russians would have sniffed it out. They probably tracked the Apollo 11 spacecraft themselves to and from the moon. With the heated competition going on between the two countries, there's no way the Russians would keep quiet about it being faked.

They would have been crying foul the moment it was learned it was a fake.

I think it was 100% real.

Why would the Russians let us get away with faking it. They had everything to gain by exposing it as a fake. They obviously were monitoring every move we made. They new exactly where the radio signals were coming from. Yet not a word from them. Biggest myth buster of all.

[citation][nom]brendano257[/nom]"NASA spent over 10 million dollars to develop the Space Pen, to combat the fact that regular ball points did not work in no gravity environments. The Russians used pencils." ^^Just for fun, but no really, I think it happened. All this conspiracy crap, just read the article of the guy who thinks the mafia threatened him through his iPod. It's all crap.[/citation]

you almost had me there 😛 but next time, quote your sources...

[nom]The Space Review[/nom]The Million Dollar Space Pen Myth is just that, a myth. The pens never cost a lot of money and were not developed by wasteful bureaucrats or overactive NASA engineers. The real story of the Space Pen is less interesting than the myth, but in many ways more inspiring. It is not a story of NASA bureaucrats versus simplistic Russians, but a story of a clever capitalist who built a superior product and conducted some innovative marketing. That story, however, is a little harder to sell to a public that believes what it wants to believe.

Did you know the Russians were listening into the broadcasts? Oh and they were racing America to the moon. Believe me, if it was fake Russia would have been ALL over it.

If you think an entire country couldn't prove it fake, but you, in ur house alone could. Then you have some real issues.

[citation][nom]Tedders[/nom]There have also been new pictures taken of the moon that shows equipment left behind by the Apollo missions.http://www.space.com/news/090717-l [...] mages.html[/citation]
LOL those are clear...
With all the tech we have today we can't even take a picture of the surface clearly.

I'm not so sure anymore, i mean NASA is supose to work with the most incredible precision in most if not everything they do. I really can't believe they would use the original footage of one of the most important moment in human history to record something else. I would believe If they say that the original footage was badly damage on a storage accident or something, but to erase it and record something else, no way.

And also i wouldn't really take everything Myth Busters say about something as a proved fact. They are just a good television show.

(Besides, has nobody at NASA heard of flicking the bloody tab on old analog tapes?!)
Knowing Nasa they probably made their own super format and forgot to add that feature.

[citation][nom]vabeachboy0[/nom]good job toms, sure know how to start a heated debate[/citation]

Haha, Marcus and I were actually discussing the QOTD earlier and I said, "oh man, I have a good one but guaranteed, the crazies will come out of the woodwork for this one..."

All jokes aside, the discussion so far is grand. :)

Anyone that believes our government has never lied to us is just being naive. Whether the moon landing was a lie or not is something I will never know for certain. Our current difficulties in space using modern technology really make our moon landing seem all the more amazing... or perhaps just downright unbelievable. The decisiveness with which we beat the Russians just makes it all the more amazing (or again... just downright unbelievable) Obviously we know how to put things in orbit, but landing on the moon and safely returning? That just seems like a big stretch for 60s era technology.

I remember watching the first moon landing on a 24" Zenith B&W Console TV :)

As for those idiots who believe it was faked, they can kiss my smelly a@@

What has the government ever been able to keep secret? Don't reference other urban legend conspiracies like Roswell, JFK, etc.. Either way what difference would it make? Water over the dam. Don't get me wrong, I think the government lies to us. They just aren't very good at it..

LOL !

No stars? Photography 101: The brightest light-source will take precedence over everything else. The lunar surface is extremely reflective and bright; so bright that its close to Terran daylight. The camera simply wouldn't be able to expose both fields of the image. The lunar surface being much much brighter then the stars, your exposure settings would require a higher aperture and faster shutter speed essentially stopping any chance of the the dim and distant light given off by the stars leaving an exposure.

If they shot the images at say f/22 (easy enough to find out, Hasselblad is obsessed with the giving out information on the cameras they used), there is no way you could capture any sky lights at that aperture without atleast 15-20 seconds of the shutter being open.

The moon landings were real :)

@ Mirazh - you're an idiot. We've been there more than once - we've been there six times. There's a difference.

Before you repeat whatever you've read on your favorite conspiracy site or "news" site, get some facts. Men died in that program, just as they've died in the orbiter program. To barf up ridiculous non-facts that trivialize their lives and their work is among the worst sins anyone can perpetrate.

Perhaps one day in 30 years people will go around saying "Drive through's never existed, and no one served fries while wearing a paper hat, that was all faked!" You'll roll over in your grave as they mock your entire life's accomplishments!

LOL i will certainly roll over on my grave if they remember me serving fries while wearing a paper hat as my entire life's accomplishment.

[citation][nom]hunter315[/nom]Nope, we were going against the russians, if we faked it and they found out that would have been really bad for us so i believe that we actually went there. And the mythbusters episode covered most of the conspiracy theories and proved them wrong.[/citation]

Actually the Russians were also trying to fake it as well so we drastically increased our aluminum foil hat spending and faked our moon landing first !
