last time i upgraded, I spent about $500 and the system runs very well and plays all my games at above 30fps in 1600x1200 with full details on.

Probably $1100-$1200... could've saved a couple hundred actually, but oh well. I think anything over $1500 is too much, and even I personally wouldn't spend over $1000-$1200. Depends on if I need a new OS or monitor.

Running an:
Opteron 144
ASUS SK8N Motherboard
1GB Ram (ECC as Opteron requires)
Radeon 9800 Pro

Spent about $1200 on it way back when with case/hard drives and all. Waiting for Core i7's to come down a bit and I'll finally retire this 6 year old computer...can't even play high def movies in real time 🙁

I'm honestly not sure how I'd add it all up! Originally, I spent about $1500 on my Alienware Area-51 3500 back in 2006. Upgrading the core components (mobo, proc, RAM, vid card, BD/HD drive, and external drive) probably tacks on at least an extra $800. I made other upgrades that are no longer in use in this machine (Upgraded from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium D, 1 GB 533 MHz RAM to 2 GB of 667 MHz, Radeon X550 to GeForce 8600GT) The total for everything I bought for this machine completely adds up to $2800. A lot of it's not being used by me anymore, but hardly any of it's completely out of service. The Radeon X550 is being used in my mother's computer because integrated graphics were just too weak, as is the 2 GB of DDR2-667. I sold the GeForce 8600GT to a friend who was stuck with a GeForce 6200LE (worst GFX card EVER!). That leaves the original motherboard, 1 GB of RAM, and two processors out of service. I'll find something to do with them... eventually.

500$
Mainboard : ASRock G31M-GS
Chipset : Intel G31
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2533 MHz
Physical Memory : 2048 MB (1 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS
Hard Disk : WDC (1000 GB)

~3k total
$1200 for the graphics/LCDs/TH2G
$1800 for the meat and potatoes of the system

Soon to be more with the ~$2k I plan on spending on RAID arrays, and another $1k for a TV as a 4th monitor.

hrm.. which system?

my latest purchase - Lenovo T500 laptop - $1900 and change including delivery (2.4ghz dual core, 4GB ram, Switchable discrete/onboard GPU, 120GB HD, laser mouse, car adaptor).

Current desktop system..
initial price was around $3500 (starting June 2005)
Dual CPU 1.6ghz opteron, 2GB RAM, 18g, 75g SCSI HD.
The case sucked badly so I upgraded that - $270 (Supermicro SC-742B)
Then the cpu fans were VERY loud. so I upgraded those - $108 (CM Hyper-48 x2)
Then my CRT died. so I got a LCD - $450 (Samsung 970P)
Then I got a bonus from work, 2nd LCD -- $450 (Samsung 970P)
Another bonus from work -- $350 -- 2x Opteron 2.0ghz cpu (x2)
CPU fans STILL too loud -- $120 Zalman CPS7900 (x2)
Upgrade video card + PSU -- $170 (GF 8600GTX, 570w PSU)
Add 3rd scsi HD -- $270 (WD 147gb scsi)
Then just this year:
-- GPU upgrade - $350 (Evga GTX280)
-- PSU upgrade - $120 (Corsair 620w)
-- RAM upgrade - $300 (4GB kit from crucial)

total cost? "enough"
having a system that does what _I_ want and quickly -- Priceless.

Theres also a home theater system hooked up to my sound card, but I had my stereo system before the PC. Electronics are worth around $3k. speakers are DIY, but sound like some you would spend $16k for.

EVGA 01G-P3-1285-AR GeForce GTX 285 SC Edition 1GB
Samsung 2693HM
Vista Ultimate 64
All in an Antec 900 case.

Roughly $2,800.00 total for this setup, dual boot XP and Vista, and consider it well worth my investment. I usually build a new rig every 3-4 years, just put aside %5 per paycheck and by the time I am ready for the latest & greatest I have a nice little pot of gold for the new toy.

About $800 a little over a year ago for:

Intel D975XBX2
Intel E6600
2 gigs PC 6400 RAM
Nvidia 512 Mb 8600GT overclocked at factory
Samsung 20X DVD Lightscribe drive
250 gig Seagate Barricuda HDD
500 watt Aerocool PSU
Centurion Coolermaster case

My most recent pc purchase was a $50 gateway E4300 off ebay. I'm going to toss a OCZ vertex into it and the thing is going to lift off the ground and run circles around all you tools who spent $1000 on a computer. ha HA!

I build very cheap systems catered to my exact needs. I currently have two homebuilts using old HP Pavilion micro tower cases. One is my HTPC running an AM2 Sempron which cost a grand total of about $225 to build. The other rig is my daily computer which runs a Celeron 420 and it cost me around $150 for everything. I only game a little and typically stick to a handful of beloved older games that run amazingly well on today's IGPs. I do not run any dual core CPUs anymore. Used to have them, but after building a dedicated HTPC I realized I didn't need the power anymore. Sold 'em and haven't looked back since.

I spent $1200 including buying Vista premium.
i7 920
GTX 260 (core 216)
MSI Eclipse X58 SLI
750GB Samsung F1 harddrive

Can't recall my other components not that it matters... those are the ones that count.

Minus $650 for monitor and speakers since I previously owned them, I spent $1700 on my current rig. That includes
case 923 cooler master,
I7 920, P6T deluxe,
6 GHz OCZ,
150 Gb Velociraptor,
750 Black caviar,
GTX280 Zotac,
850w Corsair PS etc....I felt it was worth it. I guess I could ahve spent the money on purchasing a new motorcycle, handgun, or gotten my car's clutch changed out, but I was interested in a new computer at the time 😀

Since the late 80s, I've spent thousands upgrading component by component. Was it worth it? Probably not. If I would have simply purchased a complete new system every 3 years or so I probably would have spent a lot less. At least, the skin on my knuckles would not be scar tissue from all the component upgrades.

My first custom built rig was an AMD athlon 64 4800+,2 gigs of patriot ddr 400 ram clocked at 2.5,2,2,5 with 1T timing, EVGA 6800gs graphics card, Turtle beach sound card, 2 western digital HDDs running in raid 0, all running on an Abit AN8 sli motherboard, and a Sunbeam 550w psu, all packed into a huge Antec case that I still use and love. I recycled my monitor and speakers from my previous Dell purchase. Cost of build; approximately $1200 Within 6 months I upgraded my graphics card to a 7900gto and after a year replaced the failing PSU with a 650w Zalman. I have since given that pc to my sister, in a different case, and built myself a core 2 duo system. I am continually upgrading, but as my core 2 handles everything I throw at it with ease, I will probably skip core i7. Seriously, for gaming (what I usually use mine for), unless you are running a 30" or greater monitor, you don't get much benefit from sli (vs. the fastest single gpu cards) and in turn from core i7. My last upgrade was a 23 inch 1080p monitor and my next will likely be Windows 7 and a SSD (OCZ's vertex or Intels x25-m).

I spent about $600 when I built my machine almost three years ago. Added probably 3-400 in upgrades since then. The most expensive part was my E6400 CPU for $250, because I bought it about a week after the C2D chips first launched.

I currently have that CPU with 4 gigs of memory and 640GB of hard drive space, and an X1800 GPU. I don't game much so I haven't had reason to upgrade it. A new CPU would be nice for video encoding, but I can't justify the cost of buying another first generation C2D chip that will work with this motherboard of mine, since it can't take the 45nm chips. I have a first gen Gigabyte DS3 board - the cheapest thing that would run a C2D when they came out.

I'll probably just wait for the i5 to become mainstream and then build a whole new machine.

it's a scary thought to tally up the cost of my machine.

most recently added and then moving backward.

craptastic purple 4 port kvm
altec lancing 4.1 speaker system
ibm modelM keyboard (love these things never gonna give it up)
ancient beige box full tower case
and a host of cables and supporting network including UPS units

all parts were sourced locally save the water cooling bits which i picked up on a trip to thailand. my oldest bit the case was new when the duron 600 was the shiny new o/c toy. while my keyboard is older then the case it came along after the case (scrounged from someplace ditching old parts).

Well... last rig was $1500 a couple of weeks ago. I normally spend 900 every 3 years (can't wait for 2012 to come!) and a new "good" monitor every 5 or 6 years (~$500 monitors). I don't know why, but I don't like to reuse the parts from my other builds. I guess I just want them up and running too. Also I don't upgrade my machines much, except for extra HDDs. I always try to get all I might ever need right from the start.
