I hold of on a new system until i can get the performance I desire for about $1200, this generally equates to a system which will last me 3-4 years.

My last system 2 years ago was just under $1200.
Core2duo e6600
2GB DDR2-800 ram
640GB HDD
Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB

Its served me well, I'll probably upgrade next year, or whenever the next generation of graphics cards hit as my 8800 is still capable of handling current-gen games at 1680-1050 resolution.

~$600

Antec Vertis Fusion Case (with mini Ninja Scythe HSF + PSU 430w) - $100
Q8200 - $100
ATI 4870 512mb - $130
DFI mATX Lanparty P45-T2RS - $115
1tb WD Black HD - $90
4GB Memory OCZ - $20

And probably some misc cable ties etc...

i was able to build a system in 07 for $1200. would have been less but the PSU I bought did not fit in my old case

I just realized this: the 91% figure is going to be off for one major reason: that figure is taking into account of retail sales of premade computers, not custom user-made computers (as that would be very difficult to track).

In other words, the 91% figure does not apply to most people who would be on Toms Hardware.

I built my watercooled (Koolance) pc two years ago.
All the top parts of the time, no reason to list now.
Alltogether came to $5-6000
I'm planning to put together a new one later this year.
So please keep the "dream" PC building articles coming.

I usually stick with Intel, because they do definitely make better procs, but I recently went with AMD on my first desktop upgrade in around 8 years! I orginally had a p5gd1 asus motherboard with DDR1 standards and 3.2ghz hyperthreading intel processor. I also have a pretty solid video card still, for how old it is. ATi sapphire x850 XT

but for spending only $350 I got some amazing upgrades

DDR3 asus motherboard with amd phenom ii x4 955 @ 3.2GHZ (clocks all the way up to 4.0GHZ!)
also got 4GB 1600mhz Adata DDR3 memory

So now my desktop is smokin fast. Seeing I only work part time as a 17 year old though, I can't spend anything more at the moment. I'm hoping to get a nice Asus flat panel monitor, new power supply and maybe a couple new video cards to finish my rig up once i start working more after highschool or during Co-op.

I also bought my own $750 refurbished Asus g50vt-x5 laptop. Awesome gaming laptop and nice battery life.

I love Asus ^_^
