1300 bucks would be a good estimate. I was on pain meds from a motorcycle wreck when i bought most the parts. Not exactly sure what everything cost, but it did explain why somethings were not what i remembered ordering. Know it needs to be replaced with a more current model

Well, I've lost track of how much coin I've thrown into my custom built rig over the years. It is a constantly evolving beast, though over the last few years (since 2006) it has become a bit out-of-date, especially with the gpu. It currently has the following configuration:

Antec Performance Plus 1080 SOHO File Server Tower Case (1992 Model)
Ultra X3 Modular 850Watt PSU
Asus M2N-E AM2 Mainboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.9GHz) CPU
OCZ 4GB Platinum Rev 2 PC2-6400 (1GB x 4) Memory
Sapphire RadeOn x1950 Pro 256MB PCI-E (DX9 Based) Graphics Card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Sound Card
Western Digital 640GB (WD6400AAKS) Hard Drive (Qty 4)
Western Digital 1TB (WD1001FALS) Hard Drive (Qty 2)
Samsung 22x SATA DVD+/-RW Burner
Sony 1.44mb Floppy Disk Drive
Rosewill RX-358-S eSATA/USB External Enclosure (Qty 2; For 1TB Drives)

NOTE: This doesn't include my canon flat bed scanner, epson color inkjet printer or my hp laserjet printer.

********

If I was to build a very similar dual-core amd based rig right now with the hardware available today, I'd be looking at putting out about $1,400 plus shipping at the egg, complete package. For another $50-$100, I could make it a quad-core rig instead. I have been running XP since Oct 2001. I switched to Windows 7 RTM x64 this weekend.

If I was to build a new rig right now, it would definitely be quad-core and based either on the amd phenom ii x4 or intel i920 processor with a high end gpu, either the radeon 4870/4890 1gb or a nvidia gtx260 core 216 graphics card. Just my 2 cents.

SELF-CORRECTION:

The Case is a 2002 model, not 1992, lol.

[citation][nom]tlmck[/nom]$225 for my AMD dual core, bleeding edge Linux box, not including keyboard, mouse, and monitor! Liked it so much, I built another to run Win 7.[/citation]

What did you put in it for that price?

At the time of component purchase for the past 5 machines I've built, 3 have cost more than US $1k. And, if you include the OS, the other two barely topped $1k as well.

Systems 1 & 2 (with most recent upgrades):

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (OC'ed to 3.2Ghz)
EVGA/XFX 680i LT MB
Corsair 4 x 1 GB DDR2 1066 (UC'ed to DDR2 800, 4-4-4-12)
Seagate 2 x 320 GB Sata 2 HDs, No Raid
Nvidia 9800 GT w/ 8600 GT PhysX (One system originally had an 8600 GT SLI, the other an 8600 GTS SLI)
Enermax Liberty 500w PSU
1 x Antec 300, 1 x "Good" Rosewill case
2 x DVD burners (1 IDE, 1 SATA), 1 with Lightscribe per system
Win XP Pro
Cost: ~$1.4k at time of build, w/ upgrades ~$1.5k

Systems 3 & 4 (completed ~ 1.5 months ago):

AMD Phenom 2 720 (oc'ed, don't remember speed)
Gigabyte 790X MBs
Patriot 2 x 2 GB DDR2 800 (4-4-4-12)
WD 1 x 1 TB Sata2 HD
XFX Radeon 4770 Video Cards
1 x OCZ 700w PSU, 1 x Enermax 525w PSU
CM Elite 360 Cases (Customers wanted smaller profile)
2 x DVD Burners (Both Sata), 1 Lightscribe
Win Vista Home Premium 64 bit (They had to have systems NOW.)
Cost: ~$1,050

System 5 (Currently in testing)

Intel Core i7 920
MSI x58 Pro MB
Patriot 3 x 2 GB DDR3 1333 (Timings being tested, but ram is low latency)
WD 1 x 1 TB HD, Hitachi 1 x 1 TB HD
ATI Radeon 4870 1 GB Crossfire, 1 x Asus & 1 x Sapphire
Corsair 750w PSU
Antec 300
2 x DVD burners (Both Sata), 1 Lightscribe
Win Vista Home Premium 64 bit w/ Win 7 Upgrade
Cost: $1,465 after rebates

In short, I believe that the "91% of systems over 1k are from Apple" is true because most "IBM Compatible consumers" build their own machines at this price mark.

Umm...When I bought it? 700$ built from boards.
Now? I think I've cycled through every single part in my PC except the processor and DVD Burner (Which just returned a CRC check error for the first time in 6 years, so it may be time ^.^)

But, My platform is still chugging along on my Trusty Core 2 Duo First-press ( My serial indicates it was in the first 100 batches of the processor) E6400. I float the speed between stock 2.13Ghz up to around 2.8Ghz as needed with my OCZ Vendetta 2 cooler.

Anyway, I think, after all is said and done, I've sunk in the neighborhood of 1100$-1200$ into this rig. But, then again, I waited for my GFX upgrade to hit rock-bottom, and am a sales sniper, so I've been incredibly judicious with my spending. I do, however, plan on retiring platform soon, and switching over to Core i5/i7 once prices are around 400$ for a full platform (proc/motherboard/DDR3). Or when I pick up a game, and I can't play it fluid at 1650x1080 with good graphics quality.

Oh yeah, I think I've sunk like 450-500 in monitors, too. I've got a 22" Dell that I bought with the PC, and a 24" Gateway (that I regret buying. the diffusion screen for the LCD is terrible, and has a horrendous viewing angle. However, it was the first true Dual Link DVI 24" when I bought it, so I was fine. It still serves well, but for the money I paid, I wanted a better screen.) I Can't imagine spending more than 800$ on a PC for it's first build. Unless I've got a 30" monitor, a 175$ Processor and a 300$ GFX setup is all that's needed to drive most all games between 40-60FPS on 1080p w/good GFX quality. I believe in Buying the bare minimum required and upgrading as needed, though, so what do I know?!

Just upgraded a few components... Probably close to 5K+ currently at purchased prices:

Core i7 920
Asus P6T Deluxe v2
Corsair XMS 12GB DDR3
2x 8800 GTX
3x 60GB Vertex in RAID 0
500GB HD
1000W PSU
Thermaltake Armour mid-tower
Dell 3008 30" LCD
2x 22" widescreen in portrait (one on each side)
DLink gaming router (went from 5Mb/s to 68Mb/s when I upgraded my router)
1TB external drive

I can think of about 3 systems revolving around overclocked Celerons and Athlons on open-box motherboards with maybe 1gb of ram for that price. They aren't gonna win a marathon, but they can jog a track in under 6 minutes if you catch my drift!

Last upgrade to Core 2 3ghz and P35 was 450.
Recent upgrade to Phenom II X4 2.8ghz was only about 250.
I reuse video cards for maybe two cycles then it is passed down to secondary rigs. I never spend more than 200$ dollars on a Vid card, nor more than 250$ on a proc and about 150$ on a Mobo.

It seems I always have three systems running. My gaming rig, currently
Asus P6T mobo I7 920 @ 3600, GTX 285, 6 gigs corsair dominator ram, 850
watt Corsair PSU, Blu ray burner and DvD writer, 500 gig and 1 terabyte
hard drives 24" old reliable Sony flat panel and a couple of sceptre
20" wide screens. Klipsh speakers and two gaming keyboards and one wired
and one lazer remote mouse. My "old gaming rig was running a core II duo
8400 @ 3800 which I use for my secondary systeme The oldy but goody was an AMD Opteron running @ 2520 with two 6800s in sli. I swaped them out for a 9800 gtx. Always dickering around. Had to have that I7 quad after
everything I read about it.

Lets see...
Screwless Case I bought like 7yrs ago on eBay - $45
PC Power and Cooling 650W power supply - $60 (new upgrade this year)
LG DVD Burner - $20 (new this year cause my old 4X burner is was slow and didn't want to work anymore)
AsRock Motherboard - $70 (About 4 or 5 yrs old)
AMD64 4200+ X2 CPU - $130 (about 2 yrs old) (socket 939)
4GB of RAM - FREE (new upgrade this year)
ATI X1950XT - $250 (2 yrs old)
Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer - $100 (about 7yrs old)
100GB HDD - $75 (very old)
200GB HDD - $60 (4 yrs old)
Monitor 19" NEC LCD - Free (New this year)
Altec Lansing sound system - $125 (About 10 yrs old and it still rocks the house!)
Pinnacle HDTV Tuner - $70
MS Wireless Keyboard and Mouse - $70 (About 4 yrs old)
Media Card reader - $15 (new this year, reads SDHC cards along with all the others)
---------
Grand Total - $840 over the couse of 7 yrs

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, Motherboard and RAM soon though. When I do finally get a new motherboard I'm pretty sure I'll ditch the old Sound Blaster too.

I like to keep my machines cheap, I don't feel the need for more hardware than is necessary. $550 for the parts, $180 for the monitor. No charge on the OS. I dont use it particularly for gaming, just general use, so it meets all of my requirements.

My laptop is a Toshiba w/ Core 2 Due $1050. 17" w/ dedicated graphices and 4GB RAM 400GB HD.
My desktop was built by myself. 24" and Radeon card. 8GB RAM. 2TB HD. Intel Quad Core. ~$2000 or more. easily exceed that with the accessories and external storage.

Most recent gaming rig not counting replaced parts:
Asus M4A79T
Phenom II 955 BE
4 GB Corsair DDR3
750 watt PSU
DVD Burner
Radeon 3870
Silverstone tower
Vista 64
22 inch monitor

Roughly $1900 or so.

Macbook Pro $2200 incl tax.

Office:
Mac Pro ($2400) totaling around $4000 including all hard drives, memory and the Eizo monitor to go with it. Best machine I use.

My main system cost me $1500 five years ago and it is still running fine. I will replace it this year. It has had about $200 in upgrades since then. My wife's laptop cost me $1800 two years ago. My laptop was free, but I had to repair it to be functional. My two other PC's are Frankensteins(built from parts left over from damaged and upgraded machines).
