1) MacBook Air at $2,500 a few months back; the SSD was close to 25% of the cost.

2) i7 920 homebuild server at close to $2,000 incl. 5 TB harddisk.

I spent well over $4,000 on my new HD editing rig builtx a few months ago, not including software, and I'm still adding to it. ;_;

$1000 . Bought a year ago in Uruguay (south america) the country who Homer laughs at it when he pronounces its name

Less then $300 about a year ago. Nothing special but needed something for my dad and brother to use as well as myself.

Dual Core AMD CPU, 2GB PC6400 DDR2, Motherboard with integrated graphics, 500GB SATA2, Case, PSU.

Definitely not a performance machine, but overall not too bad for the money at the time.

i sent about $1300 on a laptop 2 years ago on a sager 2090 with t7300 2.0, 8600m GT, 1 gb of memory, 160gb hard drive, 15.4 inch with 1680 resolution, and 2 9 cell batteries.

i sent another $645 on a refurished Gateway 6831 laptop. i upgraded the cpu to t8300 at 2.4, gpu is 8800m GTS, 3gb of memory, 250gb hard drive, 17.1 inch screen 1440X900.

i got a HP 2510p free from my boss at work, cpu u7700 1.33, 120 gb hard drive, and 2gb of memory. and another 3 free from work, HP 6910p with all stock items. t7500 cpu, 160gb hard drive, 14.1 inch screen, 3gb of memory.

i gave 1 6910p to me little and older sister and kept the 2910p. i still have the sager 2090 (i am about to sell it) so i game on the gateway 6831.

so i sent $1300 plus 90 on 2gb upgrade, plus $650 on the gateway, sold the stock cpu for $50 and my friend have me his t8300. plus $140 on 2 320gb hard drives for the gateway. i am really happy with and will last me for about 1.5 years since i dont game that much anymore.

Definitely under 1k for all the parts in my current build. I really only spend a few hundred at a time. First, I got my X2 5000+, 2GB of Ram, Case, Radeon 3850 512MB and motherboard while re-using my WD 200GB SE, Plextor 760A, FSP Blue Storm II, and 19" NEC Crt. I spent around $350 for those new parts (got good deals at the time) and ran it at stock speeds for a while but OC the CPU to 3.08 and the ASUS 3850 to 730 core after I added some case fans 😀. Latter on I added the WD 1TB Black and got a 22 inch LCD and Vista became my main OS, rather than the experimental one ^_^ (college gave it free to CS students at the time and I was taking one CS class). Since my lone 3850 was having a bit of trouble at 1680x1050 with anything released this year I finally added another 3850 (cheapy visiontek)and my rifle tower cooler to bring my CPU up to 3.24 while still running cooler which gave me a decent boost for well under $100.

Next I'm looking at getting the Phenom 955, when it drops under $200, and 4GB of 1066. While I'd like to get a DX11 card in November it will just depend on if I have the money and of course if they are available. I'll also probably buy a cheap board to use the 5000, one of the 3850s, and 2GB to upgrade my backup work computer (main computer uses too much power an my Athlon XP 3000 is a little long in the tooth to serve as a backup.)

Almost $650. I took my time acquiring components and there were some great black Friday deals online that week last November. I got: e8400, GA-P35-DS3L MOBO, Corsair vx550 PSU, WD 640GB aaks HDD, 2GB cheap Corsair RAM, EVGA 192 core GTX 260, Samsung CD-R/DVD+/-R drive, Arctic Silver 5, a couple very good case fans, some hardware (screws, nuts, washers), and paint.
I re-used an old HDD, my trusty mouse and vintage IBM keyboard, monitor, and a 10-year-old case (which I modified for cooling and to fit the ginormous GTX 260). I later received a 20" Viewsonic VA2026w monitor as a gift to replace my 17" CRT, so I guess you could add maybe $225 to the cost? I know it was purchased at a discount, but I don't know how much.
With a mild overclock I am very happy with the speed. I have a nice gaming rig for a great price.
I fluctuate between major and minor upgrades depending on what is coming out in the near and distant future (in computer hardware terms) balanced with what I want now. This one was VERY major as I hadn't upgraded in a while. I will soon add a big HDD to replace my old IDE drive. Maybe more and better RAM and when I go from XP Pro to Windows 7 later this year, also. But past that is up in the air. Maybe a better GPU will be next. Then maybe a CPU/MOBO/RAM + whatever else I can't re-use when I decide what I want to do beyond LGA 775. The future will dictate my plans. I haven't looked that far ahead. I'll skip the current i7's, though.

My fathar bought me my first pc back in 1989. It had 386SX cpu (later, I added math coprocessor), 2MB ram, and 40MB hdd. Display was 14" SVGA (yes, svga). 20 years ago this monster costed around $3500.

Last month I bought a laptop with 16" display, T9550, 4GB ddr2, 9600GT-1GB, 320Gb hdd, subwoofer, fingerprint redar, hdmi etc... for around $950-$1000. (I found many cheaper deals in other stores, but they didn't have any in stock and I was in a hurry)

You wont get anything this powerfull if you want a mac. In fact, you can't even buy the cheapest 15" mac with $1k.

At the time of purchase, which was about a year ago:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - $300
EVGA 780i SLI - $300
3xEVGA 9800GTX - $300x3 - $900
2x4GB Corsair Dominator 1066 - $125x2 - $250
Antec 1000Watt Quattro PSU - $250
2xWD Caviar Black 500GB 32MB Cache - $160
ZeroTherm Nirvana NV120 - $60
CoolerMaster Cosmos1000 - $250
Optical Drivesx2 - $50

Computer Alone - $2520
Plus Tax - %7.75 (At the time)
Total - $2715.30

$400 for my Toshiba U200 $65 to max the ram, $100 for a 7200RPM 2.5inch HDD. Then a whopping $100 for a HP tc4200 and $32 for a gig of ram to add to it.

I spent more on my 3GS then both of these...

Current machine:
Mobo: P45XE
Proc: Q9400 2.66Ghz Quad @ clocked at 3.2Ghz
RAM: Corsair XMS2 PC6400 - 8GB
HDD: Seagate 32MB cache 320GB Sata II Drive
GPU: Palit GTX260 SP216 Sonic Edition
Opt: DVD - Dual layer burner
PSU: 550W Chieftec
Screen: 20" Samsung Syncmaster T200
Mouse: Razer Lachesis
Keyboard: Standard black US-International (Logitech)
OS: WinXP x64 or Vista Ultimate x64 - moving on to Win7 asap.

All of this at the wonderful price of around $1500 USD

I have my own mac mini 9400m (600 euro with 2 giga) and macpro (1800 euro with discount)...

really macpro is worth about the performance...
2 xeon cores(total 4) are much better than 1 core2duo...
I have been using the macpro from 2006 and is really faster than currently core2duo in my office and I still will use for the next 5 years at least.. performance is better than in windows clearly and free of virus and problems... never have needed reinstall OS and I have >500 apps installed (and games of course) but even macmini is powerful

After the lifetime of the macpro I will buy other because I like have big capacity but to see movies I have the macmini close to TV... really silent really the best to see .mkv in HD

$280 for AMD 4850e, 4GIG Ram, Mobo, DVD+/-R, PSU, all in an old case running Ubuntu & $189 for my 22" LCD. Runs fantastic with Ubuntu.

It's hard to say really. I'm not one for replacing the complete system all the time. Last time I almost started from scratch, it set me back just under 1K - over half of which was thanks to the all new 8800gtx @ 610 bucks. Since then I've replaced motherboard, cpu and memory from an opteron (s939) to a c2d system. replaced psu and memory when the psu failed. replaced the gtx with a 4870 when that failed, and added storage. Began with 2 raptors and a 500gb storage. now I've got 7x500gb and 1 2tb storage. I think that's under 1k per year, but it's hard to say really. In 2004 I spent over a grand on more or less a new rig. northwood, 4gb ddr, x800, 2 raptors, thermaltake psu and case (huge and hugely expensive) and lots of ide drives thanks to the epox pca3+ board with room for 14 drives (i think).
Just a few weeks ago I bought a system for just over 1K as a gift. I've got a bit of trouble making it work though (didn't spend much time on it). It must've cost more than 1K when it was new (second hand). 150gb cheetah sas drive, 1tb samsung f1, p6t deluxe, i7 920 (c0), 12gb 1066mhz memory, hd4890, ocz 750w psu (or 850, dun remember), a lovely looking lian li chassis with a surprisingly flimsy power button and a ton of fans making way too much noise.

ps. if you're an expert on that cursed asus board, help me out!
