Most of the ones I've built are general purpose and didn't need much special and came in around 550 for just the tower. My old gaming PC was 1000. The new one that I'm building is a lot more elaborate and will be a lot higher quality and therefore cost more. Price tag will be about 6500 to 8000.

Five years ago when I was working and bringing in lots of cash in overtime work I was makeing at least one full computer per year pluss upgraids back then I spent $6,800.00 I always payed for the top of the range the best in the field but of that 3,600 went on 1 x cpu 2 x gpu
But now I still serch for the best in the field but not top of the range I am not a person to rave over how much I saved rather the quality and performence for what I want
I have been updateing my latest computer for the past 4 years but I mix top of the range with mid range
eg:top of the range cpu, 8 gb ram, Monitor, case, hard drive, mouse ( two per year )
Top of mid range 4 x gpu, hard drive, keyboard
I have been limited now to 350 to 700 per year upgraid I still have two more gpu's to get so I will end up with 4 x HD4850 1gb mem, when I first started this build I had then the top AMD CPU 3.2ghz x2 so 3870s or 4870s we too fast and too expencive so I went for 4 x 4850s 1gb mem. I still need to upgraid to Phenonim 2 x4 3.2 ghz CPU and one pair of DDR2 OCZ 4gb Ram 2x2 1055 platinum to make up a total of 8gb ram
well I have always tried to go for quality/performance over price but i think I am just keeping up at a mid range level while still satisfying my building and oc-ing needs

Just got one for 1200 dollars on newegg. Core i7 920 and integrated graphics card. Decided to upgrade that myself once next gen gpus come out.

I replace my Mobo/CPU about every 1 to 1 and a half years. I replace my GPU about every 6 months to a year depending on what the next big thing offers.

All and all, I spend about $1500 a year on a full system. I go for the bang-4-your-buck parts and now I do mid-high range GPU's in SLI. $1500

My wife games with me, so her system will mirror my PC closely. So per year I normally spend $3000 on PCs.

Also, this is just for the main PC. I spend more if you add cost of nice monitors (24" Dell 1920x1080 atm), I just bought us 2 G19 keyboards, I have a NAS with 2x 1TB hard drives for networked storage, G9 mice, G35 headset, $250 serta PC chairs, $250 glass L-shaped desks to hold it all, ect ect.

but $1500 per year per PC is standard for me.

Mac suck and people who use them get cancer. Just fyi.

Ati x200 - integrated
Duron 1,6 Ghz
512 MB ram

first bought some HP for $600 at BestBuy - never again - their knowledge and "customer service" sucks - Vista was crashing every hour or so - and performance over all was horrible - returned same week - was charged i think 15% restocking fee :|

then decided to build my own online - that was over 2 years ago -
Toshiba laptop - $1500
GF Go7600 - was hoping that the graphics would be better :|
Intel core duo - 1.83 GHz
2GB RAM
80GB HDD

but hey, i've got fingerprint reader 😀

I went a with a different route. As for how much did my computer cost or how much did the system cost the answers are different yet tied together. I purchased 2 (now 3) 3870's with an AMD 6000 and 4 gigs of memory. I spent my extra money on a samsung 275t,prelude sound, killer nic, g7, saitek pro with rudder, SH pc166 and after market cooling.

I wanted a gaming computer not just a pc that had a fantastic card but lousy CPU or visa versa. I am now going to water cool my cards ($25ea for 3 EK full cover)and then hard mod them to 950/1350 (already have 1 done) in tri fire. I am also upgrading the cpu. Total upgrade cost ~$200 with some horse trading for a rad and and pump.

I may not have had the best graphics over the last two years, but I have had an excellent time gaming.

Well last year I upgraded the 2 main systems for my wife and I. Core 2 duo based systems, 4gb, 750gb hdd, Antec 900 case, corsair 650 ps, EVGA 260 GTX, 23" lcd, vantec hot swap back up drives, so, about 2000$.

This year I ran cat6, replaced the nas, laptops, switches, router for gigabit and draft n. built an htpc, and the wife got a second core 2 duo for her workroom. the only oem system is her Gateway Tablet for her art.
My laptop was built from an MSI barebone system. oh, and a new Xerox Phaser color laser printer network attached. so another $2000+, this year.

I think a lot of the cost is offset on many peoples systems because the readers here seem to not buy oem, and instead purchase parts and build out a custom system themselves, and Newegg allows us to maximize our bang for the dollar. :) plus my motto is "never pay retail".

Overall, my computer cost me in excess of $1000, though it is a custom job as most computers I know of are. The pre-fab jobs here in Brazil cost a fortune due to the 70%+ import tariffs on electronics, and while isolated parts are usually about double the US prices, machines such as by Dell and others cost even more. Factor in the fact that revenue is far below that of the US, and you could say computers and electronics cost about 4 times here. Rant aside, even with US prices, my computer cost more than $1000 when put together last year with E8400, ATI4870, Noctua Cooler, etc.

workstation: 1600$ ~2y ago
moviebox: ~400$ 6months ago
+ 600$ for 26" lcd

When I built mine it costed around 2000, because it was the very first PC so I needed everything including a new widescreen display, and in my country these components are more expensive than in USA.

Now I'd say it costs around 1500. In only 6 months, it lost 500 dollars of value! LOL.

Total price... Just over $4000 AUS, or $3270 US.

my rig cost me around €2000, screen included - in 2005:
- 1280x1024 Viewsonic 19" LCD
- Athlon64 X2 3800+
- 1x1Gb DDR-SDRAM
- Geforce 6600 passive
- 250 Gb Hitachi HD
- a Geforce 6150-based mobo (swapped several times under warranty: changed brand etc.)
- Arctic Cooling CPU fan
- a mini tower case and a quiet 450W PSU

Since then:
- added 1x1Gb of DDR-SDRAM (dual channel now): €45 (2006)
- swapped screen for 1680x1050 22" Viewsonic LCD: €350 (early 2008)
- swapped the Geforce for a RadeonHD 4850: €130 (mid 2008)
- swapped HD for a 750 Gb one: € 110 (2009)
- changed Radeon's fan for a dual slot one: €40 (2009)

Total machine cost (rounded because of stuff like recycled components, extra fans, RAM heat spreaders for GPU, etc.): € 2700. Alive for: 4 years, and still going strong enough to run recent softwares and games with reasonable performance and graphics details.

As many here are doing, I usually build from the ground up with good components and upgrade along the way (cpu, graphic card, HD, PSU) at least once before a new build so it's hard to figure precisely. I do however have tracked all Hardware and software expenses since 1993. Including all peripherals (printer, router, scanner etc) I have invested 23222$ Can in Hardware in the last 16 years and 5130$ in Software in the same time period. I currently have 1 Laptop, 1 Main Desktop, 1 secondary test machine and 1 desktop for the kids (which is almost equivalent to my main desktop as I found out the hard way that it doesn't pay to buy underpar hardware for the kids in the long run)
