We gave the carriers big tax brakes 10+ years ago and they promised a world class Internet. What did we get? Nothing. They took the money an ran to Wall Street to post big profits. How the Government wants to invest billions in the Internet and the carriers are demanding that there not be any performance measurements or increases in performance requirements attached. Just like the banks, they want the money to boost profits and run to Wall Street again.

We should have 30Mb, two-way links to do web cam, video conferencing, streaming video, net server for the extended family, and other activities that these speeds will make available. This should cost about $40/month with no restrictions. We have already paid so much that we should now get some benefits. The ISPs and back bone carriers are a utility and should be controlled as such.

Just for starters, we need to clarify what "capped" means. Generally speaking ALL connections are capped at their rated bandwidth (or slightly less if your provider is on the shady side of things -- READ: TIME WARNER.) As far as transfer rate caps go, I wouldn't pay anything over what I'm currently being charged for as I already have a connection, through Time Warner, that has no transfer capacity. My feelings about this matter are to the point where I will happily purchase a DD-WRT box and steal my connection outright before paying a per GB fee for what I download.

BTW, I live in Cleveland, Ohio. Trace my IP and bring up my customer account info if you'd like.

If I could get parallel, uncapped 20 Mb connection, I would pay upwards of $120 a month for it. That being said, uncapped total download is more important to me than raw speed. A 100GB capped 20Mb line is less useful to me than a no-limit 3Mb line.

I pay like $54 now for uncapped 8mbps,(but it is going to be capped soon) and I think that is simply riduculous. And as far as cable televison costs.....don't even get me started on that nonsense. My Cable/Interenet package runs me $160 per month, and I have a pretty basic package, nothing premium. Way, way too much money for what you get.
