A LOT of people would be willing to try Mac Os 10 or any of the Mac OS's. Though if I have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a computer that isn't even up to date with todays newest technology then I'm not going to buy it. If Apple would allow people to buy there OS and use it on any platform they would be WAY more successful. As of now a lot of people that made the switch have Windows installed through Boot Camp or Parallels. If they weren't allowed to do it they would stick with Windows only most likely because let's face it... when you're used to Windows you get used to the features you want to be there and when they're not you get lost. Apple relies heavily on other people to make programs to elaborate on the programs that they provide with their computers. Most of the programs aren't good enough and need some additions. All in all Apple is stupid with their computer market.

1) Stop trying to decide what users want
2) Make their apps a lot more user-friendly by making them more customizable (e.g. Safari does nothing special besides browsing, no keyboard shortcuts)
3) 2-button mouse
4) More gaming support

I think Apple can survive without open software platforms. Otherwise, Apple OS may just as well be MS Windows.

[citation][nom]demonhorde665[/nom]your are the kind of A-hole that makes me dislike apple users themselves and not jsut the company ... get a life please.[/citation]
I don't care! Go play your video games we are never going to meet because your busy playing world of warcraft all day... Just because people can't understand that there is more to computers besides being the fastest is not my problem. Funny part is the only mac i use is my hackintosh laptop and i love it for day to day tasks. I even work in IT in a hospital that has 95% windows based servers and pc's; I do a bit of scripting with batch file, vbs, and autoit so i'm not that new to computers or computer illiterate. So i find it funny how a bunch of pc illiterate people come on here and back macs because they are just bearly learning windows...

I actually would like to see half these people try to build their own hackintosh and watch them struggle through console commands. The thing is, once you get it running it keeps running... i have not rebooted for about a week now and just used suspend when i don't use it, but it's up most the day and it just as fast as a fresh boot.

Everyone doesn't like it but no one does because they don't know what to use it for or want to spend the time learning... not anyone's fault but yours.

For Apple to grow in the future they need to attack new market where their force will shine. Lets face it Apple is controlling their hardware so it is easier to have effective software. They found a niche with people who like to use technology but don't wan't to understand technology. Like people working in creative field.

That taken into account, Apple should target corporate buisness with more specific need where the stability of controlled hardware and software is a must. One example is airlines, they use basic software, need stability and commonality but on top of that security. Just propose a box with an easy to use OS wich is stable and support the product and you have a winner. IBM went that way but they got rid of their hardware divsion. (which was not a top performer)

In my mind apple still has an edge on packaging a full product over DELL or HP but they are not attacking market where that full package has an added value for the customer.

The thing is, why would i want to build a "hackintosh" in the first place. The only reason i would want to do that is if i wanted mac's osx. You like it, so you built a fake mac. However i don't like it so there is no reason for me to have any need to struggle through all of those "console commands". People learn that kind of stuff when they feel they need to modify some part of the system (or the whole system). You are correct that i probably could not handle a task like that, but it does not make me computer illiterate in any way. Since i am fine with how vista runs, there is no need for me to try and hack and modify in any way. I leave stuff like that up to the programmers, and then i use the system the way they designed it to be used.

To half quote what you said, "once i get it running (as in Vista) it just keeps running", so i don't exactly know how that makes your computer special. Although i do admire that you have the computer knowledge to make something like that. It's just not something that i would ever feel the need to do.

Finally, you said no one wants a mac because they don't know what to use it for. I thought it was a computer, meant to be used like a computer. what are a mac's special uses that you find yourself taking advantage of?

I disagree with the ones who say they should open their OS to every PC, just because this would sink their hardware division, which is where they make the real money. I believe this move would rather make Microsoft run for it's life, but is not necessary to make Apple bigger than it is.

Also disagree with licensing other companies to build macs. They've already done that and almost led them to bankruptcy, because their profit margin would disapear.

What they should do is to increase the options of hardware they sell to accomodate less expensive towers, iMacs and minis.
Also, they should make their hardware more friendly to upgrades, ranging from ram to cpu and graphic cards, of course. This would extend the lifetime of their products and in the same time would let the people who want to expand the capabilities of their computer to do so.
Finally, they should pay more attention to the gaming community, encourage developers to make compatible games or better, manage, somehow, to make DirectX games to run natively on OS X, rather than having to use bootcamp.

First off, you seem like a level headed guy and i respect that, most of this was aimed at the Mac bashers who don't have a single idea what they are talking about and spew out so much garbage.

One example is people talking about Mac's don't have a right mouse button... Just because the design hides it does not mean you can't right click.

The purpose my hackintosh is mainly to do everyday tasks, I find it i have never had a problem with the system not starting because of a bad install of a program or some update gone wrong (*well besides that fact its a hackintosh and some updatex enable the DRM functions of the OS again which would not be an issue on a real Mac).

The appearance of it looks great and all the options are well organized. Also the appearance and effect of the OS is not a skin but built in and it does not take extra resources or much resources (unlike aero). You may think it's good to have this option, but when a program is written to do multiple thing it tends to not be as efficient as it could be at doing one thing well.

There is less malicious code around the internet built for OS X, and I know that has a bit to do with popularity of windows compared to mac's (but why not take advantage of this), and you know that awesome feature called "user account control" in Vista? well that has been in mac's for a while now, it basically asks for your admin password on major OS changes. It's also compatible with all my windows equipment, even though I'm on a Mac i can still remote into my PC's and I can use all my windows shares, it's not a problem.

Overall i just think its a more polished tool that can be used day to day without worries, and the options that are available are not going to blow up your system or make you reboot into safe mode just so you can undo them. Of course it does not do everything but it's very good at what the programs it does have for it.

I too have a vista machine as a media center for multiple reasons. First off as a media center it just sits there and i don't have to run many updates or install many programs (and i have had an update corrupt all new HD recordings). But after disabling all the garbage like aero, readyboost, prefetcing (which always crashes) and making media center instead of explorer the shell it doesn't run too bad. Secondly I don't install or uninstall programs, so once i get it right it stay that way as long as nothing changes. Lastly because mac tv just sucks right now as a media center.

I also have a XP machine for the occasional left4dead and countrstrike source. I don't have any problems with that but it's an old platform... and i have high hopes for windows 7, it hopefully can take over for my media center and my gaming machine.

Anyways the whole point of this is... I don't understand why people pick one side and well it seems like windows users are more guilty of this. Mac made a very nice and polished OS and they can charge whatever they want for it as long as people are willing to pay... who know's where it will lead and competition has never been a bad thing (unless your competing for your girlfrinds love or something but then again maybe you just shouldn't be with her if you gotta compete...) LOL

Have a nice day =]

+1 for that rather lengthy, but well written explanation. i have been waiting for a long time in this forum for someone to reply without an opinion, but instead reasoning.

I too disable aero, simply because i like the plainer look and snappier feel. UAV control is kind of annoying to me, so i disable that too. I was using readyboost, but with 4 gig of ram i actually felt that it was slowing down my system by putting my flash drive as a priority over the ram. Prefetching i do find useful simply because it seems to make all of my most used programs load faster. I first noticed this when i downloaded firefox. I had used IE for so long that i was used to it opening up really fast. when i started using firefox, it felt like the program was taking forever to respond. But now it is "prefetched" i guess and loads just as fast as IE.

I try to stay away from choosing sides, but it makes it more difficult when i feel that other people are not making statements with logic or any kind of fact behind them. If more people explained things instead of popping off "PC's OWN" or "Everyone knows mac has the best notebooks", then a lot of these forums would be better suited for real communication. I know it probably seems as if the Windows side is more guilty of this, but you have to keep in mind the number of Windows users versus mac users. I think proportionally it is about even, but then again i haven't been in these forums for very long. I think you did an awesome job explaining how well your system works, and im glad there is some maturity in these posts.

On a last note, i agree that having Apple in the market is a good thing, as it does increase competition which is good for the consumers. And really everyone should be entitled to their own taste, whether it's a mac, a pc, or a hackintosh lol.

I can't believe i am typing at 3AM. Goodnight everyone.

I despise macs because 1. They are ungodly priced; 2. There is no option for customization. You must buy one model or the other, no options in between. Allow people to customize their computers to tailor to specific needs. If you want a laptop that can play a few games, you have to get the macbook pro for almost $3k. I don't want to pay for all that extra garbage I don't need. And why obligate a 19x14 res display in a 17" frame? You have to have near perfect vision to read text and even then you have to lean in and squint. Take a note from Dell and allow people to make a laptop (or desktop) that tailors to their specific needs, instead of having to get a generalized configuration.

If Apple lowered its prices (base prices and especially upgrade prices), there's no reason why I wouldn't want to buy Apple products.

I have to agree with most people's sentiments here.

Apple needs to free up their OS. Let ANYONE who buys it use it. Not only on an "Apple" brand desktop or laptop.

Break their AT&T contract with the iPhone. How many more iPhones could they have sold if they'd made a deal with a MUCH BETTER cell phone company (Verizon anyone?).

Lower prices on Apple products. Apple's desktops and laptops are ridiculously expensive. You can build or buy a much faster PC or laptop for a ton less money.

If Apple chose to open their OS to the market as a whole, it would create real competition between Apple and Microsoft. Which would ultimately benefit everyone. As of now, Apple simply competes through hardware, and creates products that require other Apple products to function (i.e. iTunes).

they need competative pricing OR they need to give you the type of hardware you are spending 3 grand for when you buy a $3000 pc. not the low-end stuff that they currently ship which costs hundreds of $ less from other manufacturers.

You make a few good points but i think what makes apples OS so nice and stable is the fact that they focus on making it work on a few select pieces of hardware with polished and tested drivers, and not on every computer and leave it up to the manufacturers to make sure their drivers are good with no quality control.

Now i know this seems like it should be the responsibility of the manufactures of the hardware, BUT most people will point their fingers at apples and not the shoddy piece of hardware they purchased. This is why I like apple is because of the standards they try to follow, i know it may limit things but at the same time it has huge benefits of stability and reliability.

lol last time i checked there is nothing inside a mac hardware wise that is not on a pc, why would i spend well over a 1000 dollars for a system that comes with 500 dollar hardware and that would limit me to their own over priced stuff? why would i want an OS that isnt even compatible with every software just because it looks pretty? why would i spend well over a 1000 dollars for system that doe4s not even give me the option of gaming should i decide to game at some point?.....you can try and justify it however you want but the truth does not change for what you get they charge waaaayyy too much.

Rofflecake bbq!!111! Your absolutely right! LOL OMG...

Same like there is no difference between a lexus and a ford except a ford is half the price. They both have gasoline engines and 4 wheels ZOMG why is lexus "waaaaaayyyy" more expensive!?

Ahhhh come on norbs. i sense the sarcasm, but i think i can get a pc with high quality components and still be a lot cheaper than a mac with its respective hardware. My analogy, and it is a lame one, would be a bugatti veyron vs. ssc ultimate aero. The ssc ultimate is the fastest street legal car, while the bugatti is the 8th fastest. Yet the ssc ultimate is half the price of the bugatti.

Now i know both have to have quality components in their build. Yet somehow, one has quite a markup on its price. That would be my not completely accurate analogy in car terms when it comes to a performance pc and a performance mac. However i do think its better than say ford vs. lexus. come on now i drive a ford mustang, and though i love it, i know its cheaply made. quality pcs are not comparable to fords.

Can someone close this thread? i can't help but posting lol and i think its time to drop the subject anyways.

LOL yeah i know but did you read his post it was kinda disrespectful IMO, i put some thought into mine and he comes here all fired up saying the same thing over in response to my post that is in fact off subject without much to back up what he is saying. anyways lol i think i'm going to refrain from posting around here it's far to crowded with windows die hards. It's obvious that windows is most popular, but no one really questions if it's superior.

My response was not disrespectful in the least, i told you the truth and your analogy was foolish because a lexus is made with extra high quality components much more than a ford, in the case of a mac the internal components are not all that special, their hard drives are not the best out there, their ram is generic too and their drives are nothing special either, their processors are intel xeons and what not wow like i could not get that for less in an i7....there is really no need to debate,go on the apple website and build a nice system, then go to hp and do the same thing and the difference is obvious, two computers with pretty much the same hardware and yet over a 500 dollar price difference add to that the fact that you won't have the option of playing most modern games on a mac and the fact that for several softwaes and programs you might still end up having to run windows on that mac and voila...you end up with a system that was a lot more expensive yet a lot less versatile than the hp you could have gotten and as far as desktops and homebuilts go lol....don't even get me started on the mac pro...so yeah go ahead and be sarcastic if you need facts i will bring you facts it is common knowledge that macs are over priced for the hardware they offer and their OS despite the pretty GUI is still nowhere near as versatile as windows, moreover windows seven is turning out to be just as good in my opinion.so go ahead and bring more sarcasm i will just embarass you with facts.

Izzy, part of what makes Macs "simply work" is that they control the use of the hardware that makes them so they can optimize very easily, and transition from 32bit-64bit without a hitch, because they change the hardware/OS at the same time to keep up with it. But yes more variety would be helpful, and hardware customization would be a dream come true.

Somehow integrate or emulate DirectX. Get rid of the hardware and fully concentrate on the OS. Work on drivers for different variety of hardware out there. They could also offer Apple branded design cases with quality power supply options. Give advanced users the ability to tweak the OS to their liking as much as possible. Give simple users simple choices. Basically, think of the other 99% of the people, instead of 1% they're now. Affordable prices - extremely important. Let users have the basic OS for free, and have them pay for additional features (this will eliminate piracy). LOL, now that I think about this, MS will probably buy them if they actually do it 🙂

no one chased after the design ques of aplle about the mac book air pro, because its a god damn stupid idea in the first place thats why NO ONE had done this before!
