Hi! I'm wondering about an issue that I'm having with my performance in games. If the graphics are too high, the GPU is maxed out and my frames drop. However, when I turn the graphics down, I notice that instead of getting higher frames, my graphics card usage drops, while my CPU usage skyrockets. What can I do so that my graphics card doesn't give all the work to my CPU? Thanks!
Specs:
GTX 1060 6GB
i5-7600K
16GB DDR4
HP 920 M.2 500GB

Solution
The higher frames cause the cpu load to go up. The gpu cannot transfer work to the cpu, they do different things. Your best FPS is set by the cpu, the resolution and game settings you can achieve that FPS at are set by the gpu.

So does that mean that if I want my game to have higher max frames, I need to upgrade my CPU?

fps is mainly the cpu and resolution and eye candy is the gpu.

so you got to play with the settings and find the best mix for you. low enough resolution to keep the cpu less than maxed, but high. and that keeps the gpu working close to max as well. might be lower resolution but more eye candy or higher resolution with little of the eye candy. you just got to play with the settings while keeping tabs on which piece is working at what %

Drop your resolution to 720p and see what your FPS is. This will reduce the workload on the gpu and show you roughly the best FPS your cpu can deliver. Check this by looking at cpu usage on each core, one or more will be at 100%. If not happy with that max FPS then yes a cpu upgrade would be required.
