hi, i have Asus prime b660ma wifi with a 12100.... i was thinking about upgrading to a i5 or even i7 from later generation.
through the News, i saw there is a problem that may cause the CPU to die or burn... whatever the term is.

since intel cpu doesn't have any kind of warranty in my area, is this rational to do such a upgrade? or should I go with 12th gen i5 or i7?

p.s, already installed latest version of BIOS update from Asus web site. 34XX

What do you use this PC for?

Might be worthwhile to list the spec of the current machine.
i want to use rcps3 for emulating ps3 Games. that's the only program that made me think of changing my cpu...

everything else is fine with 12100. i mean casual gaming or multimedia.

here , 14400 price is equal to 12700

should i avoid 12th gen as well?
12400 is not that much of an upgrade.

unfortunately i couldn't open that link. it won't open

With current BIOS/microcode patches and newer CPU batches you should be safe specially with 12th gen, just add more cores, it's good for emulators.

well, i got the opportunity to sell my MOBO+cpu+ram today for a good price.
i guess i'll take it ...
i won't buy a AMD sice the cheapest cpu from amd , which i guess its 7600X, has 20% higher price tag compared to 12700k.

i may wait until 15th gen, and use my old Q9550 for a while

That is quite a step backwards in performance.
!!! in spades.
Life is too short to be using a slow pc.

First of all, update your bios to level 3403:
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-c...elpdesk_bios?model2Name=PRIME-B660M-A-WIFI-D4
It will include sufficient protections.

Here is a list of the processors that your motherboard supports:
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-c...desk_qvl_cpu?model2Name=PRIME-B660M-A-WIFI-D4

You might look at a I5-13500 processor for a cpu boost.
It is a 65w base processor that should have no longevity issues.

so 65 is fine? someone named punkncat above said that ، all 65 and above are affected..

also i couldn't find 13500 in local stores.

only 13400-13600-14400-14600 and all i7s from 12 to 14 gen... i believe i9 is worthless with this motherboard chipset. also way out of the price budget for a uncertain product...

already updated my BIOS 4 days ago.

yea i know that is more than a decade old. but i always thought that i will upgrade this cpu later in a year or so when i got 12100 back in 2022. if its going to be a headache for me , i rather Not to upgrade at all since i rarely use my PC.

also i didn't upgrade my asus tuf 2019 9th gen, because of the same reason. a repair center told me not to do so and keep it until next gen. i had asus K3605(13th gen - 4060) in mind.

now I'm stuck. i believe buying a ps3 is making more sense and avoid emulators 🥴

12th generation is safe.
13th and 14th generations are still in a position to wait. Don't think about moving to AMD, if things just do not work out for 13th and 14th generations, you can still upgrade to an i7 in 12th generation. Give it a few more weeks.
