My friend is upgraded his computer and since I told him I was looking to upgrade my graphics card he offered to sell me his 7950 GX2 for 250$. This is a little above my price range but it does offer excellent performance. I am wondering if it is worth the extra money, and what is the over clocking capabilities of it?. Also how powerful a power supply should I get if i buy this card?

We could help you more if you post what your current card is, its kind of hard to tell someone if they should upgrade if you dont know what they have already.

Another point too: are you running an SLI mobo? The GX2s need them to run properly.

Cool, I guess I will buy it instead, still need a recommended wattage on a power supply though. And is there any disadvantage about it not being manufactured anymore?

I am running a single GX2 card on y non-SLi board and it is great.

2000 points higher than my 7900GT in 3DMark 06

The card takes 2 power cables so it does take quite a bit of power. I'd say 500W or higher will do.

my story...i loved the card at first...but it runs REALLY HOT. hitting 100*C is not a far stretch...i do about twice a week. frame rates drop once the card gets hot...there is basically no aftermarket cooling for the card...

right now, for 250 you could get a card that would shatter the 7950gx2. the 7950gt is much better. or go with an 8800gts 320.

on paper, the 7950gx2 is a great card...but realistically, it is nothing more than 2 7900gt's glued together.

<--my level may label me as a stranger or newbie but my knowledge of this graphics card is vast as i've owned and researched it since the day it was released. wow, i had to register just to respond to this post. I'm appalled at the answers to your question i've seen in this thread and the lack of knowledge and information that some of the subscribers gave you.

1. The 7950gx2 is essentially 2 7900gt 512mb's with an internal sli bridge.
2. You DO NOT need an sli motherboard to run this card but your current motherboard should be on the supported list found here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/geforce_gx2_sbios/us.asp
3. It does get hot, proper case cooling is a must, a side intake fan or a 120mm front intake fan will help to cool this card, but also keep in mind that these cards are meant to run hot.
4. The card only requires (1) ONE pci-e power connector (or a 2 molex to pci-e adaptor) , it can be run off a good quality 450W power supply w/ 26A on the 12V rail. (This is what I'm using to power it - OCZ Modstream 450W)
5. Try to talk your friend down about $25 and you will certainly NOT regret your purchase, it is a fantastic card for playing all modern games at high resolution and is easily overclockable.
6. The 7950gt is not a faster or better card and the 8800gts 320mb is fast but lacking crucial mb's of ram to run higher resolutions w/ aa turned up. (see many reviews)

you got it. :) hope he made a good decision that he's happy with either way. thats what matters. being fully informed makes buying decisions fun.

dood.. I wouldnt do it.. look here..
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=581&model2=517&chart=211

Compare it to what you could buy for 250 new.. A 7950GT or around a x1950xt... Id get one of those instead.. or even wait for the dx10 competition.. Your x1300 might have a little trouble holding on till then, but still.. IMO a waste of money...
DOOD, Toms VGA charts are always wrong; a 7950GX2 is 2x as fast as a 7950GT as it's essentially two cards in one. I'd take that card for only $250.

Well.. in theory yeah it should be "twice as fast" but it as always been crappy drivers hindering the performance of the 7950GX2..

DUDE. i have the card. it overheats like anything and i have 4 120mm fans blowing on it. gets to 100 celcius like its nothing. without proper drivers, this card is lacking, like the previous poster said.

Are you serious? Is that natural? Sounds like you need a 3rd party GPU fan to cool that baby.

Unlike the 8 series, the 7 series couldnt do HDR and anti-aliasing at the same time rite? SO my question is if a 7 series is on sli (or 7950 x2 for that matter) could it enable HDR and anti-aliasing? Theoretically one card could render each feature, correct?

sounds like you should rma that card. with good case cooling it shouldn't get that hot. perhaps it fell through the quality cracks.

i thought about it but i wasnt too sure weather i should...me and my friends always thought that it was abnormal too, but i've read about other people that have the same problem, so i figured that it was normal. do you think i should try to rma it?

trust me...i've looked. other than getting a spacer kit and 2 zalman vf900 fans, theres nothing. i would go water cooling but i dont have enough for a good setup, and gpu blocks for this card are upwards of 200 dollars. i also transport my computer around a lot, so i dont know how much i wanna have a watercooling setup while my computer is in the back seat of my car.

i for one think nvidia should just make a gx2 only driver that unlocks the full performance of that card. the current drivers for this card are, as previously stated, lacking.
