Question about building a PC

I'm almost ready to start building my first computer, but as I was watching the Newegg videos on how to build a PC, I had a question. In the video, he does an external boot, but I don't understand how he connects the video card to the monitor to get a picture (If that makes sense.) Help is appreciated.

Just get a DVI-D to DVI-D cable and save $8.
