Hello. I apologies if this is the wrong section to post this.

today in my building they are doing maintenance work on the electricity in the basement and neglected to let us know ahead of time. My pc turned off earlier this morning when we lost power and the power quickly came back on so we didn’t think much of it.

10 minutes ago they shut the power off again and then we found out why.

can these power outages (literally just then ripping plugs out of the socket and replacing things) hurt my pc? I have a Corsair rmx 850w gold psu and my pc is plugged into a surge protector.

thank you very much.

When you randomly unplug things or have brownouts and blackouts, you can see power spikes. Power spikes also occur when the power resumes, and even power spikes when something large shuts off, like an AC unit.

Surge Protector should keep anything crazy from getting through, and the RMx is a high end model with good sized capacitors. It should be able to absorb quite a bit before anything gets through to the low voltages.

High end surge protectors will stop working when the protection stops working. Cheaper ones will just not have working surge protection but still work as power strips. Check which type you have, and if the hardware you are trying to protect is worth investing in, get a better surge protector.

Not much more you can do besides get a UPS.

Understood thank you. My pc turned on just fine (took a while to log into the desktop for whatever reason so I’m freaking out) and I have it off for now.

my surge protector isn’t too old, maybe a year or 2? I made sure to buy a good one after searching around. I hope it is good anyway.
