Question about RAM speed.

Hello,

According to the asus page the sabertooth Z77 can support up to 1866mhz ram but the i7-3770k can only support up to 1600mhz? So does this mean I couldn't use 1866mhz ram?

It just means that it would run at 1600MHz speeds, but when Intel puts out a CPU capable of 1866MHz RAM, that board will support it, assuming Intel doesn't reserve it for a new chip design.

You can, but there's not much reason to. 1333 is the max supported for Sandy Bridge, but as you can see, I'm using 1600 RAM with my 2500K currently.

1600 is the sweet spot for Sandy and Ivy Bridge CPU's. Anything faster just doesn't add that much performance (you would never notice the difference after 1600).

Intel already has some cpu's that can support higher but there out of my reach budget wise so I suppose getting higher than 1600mhz would be wasted.

No, you can run it at 1866 just fine, it's just not very beneficial to do it.

It's not wasted in everything, it really depends on what you're doing.
