I am replacing my old stock motherboard for a Sony Vaio R with an MSI H81M-P33 motherboard and replacing my old Pentium 4 (540J?) with a Pentium G3460. If I reinstall the OS with I lose all of my data on the drive? Windows XP is my OS and I am planning on keeping it because I have another computer that already has Win10. Also any advice on replacing PSU? My old HDD is a Hitachi Deskstar from 2004, how could I make it compatible with the new MOBO?

Solution
Suggestion... by an inexpensive ($40) SSD and install Windows to that.... then your HD stays as is and you can just delete the old Windows install when you have time.

Unplug HD data cable prior to installing OS ... conenct SSD to lwoerst numbered SAT port.

When done installing all your hardware drivers from manufactures web site and running windows update, shut down and connect HD to 2nd lowest njumbered port

How can I transfer the data? The hard drive doesn't get detected by my new PC (due to compatibility?), so how could I transfer?

I ordered the SATA to USB cord, but the second thing does not apply because the old and new drives are SATA.
I also know the old HDD has some pretty bad viruses (Slenfbot), can I safely connect it to my new PC and scan it?
