Im building budget(ish) pc, and I want to get the new Pentium g3258, and I have a few questions, When I saw the specs, it states that on 'memory support', it says that its only '1333mhz'. Does this mean that I can only get 1333mhz memory? And another, should I get this CPU?

Thanks In Advance 😀

Solution
Im typing this from my new build! So much performance for so little money im shocked !!!:pt1cable:

G3258 @ 4GHz unCore 4,7GHz Core 1,3 Volt
Gigabyte Z97 budget board
2x4 GB Vengeance 1600 @ 2000 10-11-10-30-1T
EVGA GTX 750 @ 1350 / 1200
CX 430 watt

That's good. Glad you are happy with the performance!

I'm not sure myself. I'm not tech-head as mentioned earlier, just a consumer that wants the most out of my money but I can tell you that on average the G3259 can be oc'd to 4.5 Ghz stably and very easily air cooled and water cooled it is reported to be stably oc'd up to 4.8 Ghz. My kid's cpu still processed like 25%ish of total gigaflops (whatever the fuck that is) as my oc'd i5 4670k@ 4.2Ghz but for mmo's this 2core chip is excellent. And as far as Gpu, I've heard the 750ti is about the range you want to pair this cpu with so I imagine any of the 750ti cards would work. If you are going to spend the money, why not get the STRIX? We got the EVGA FTW for $170 at the time though It sells for as little as $140.

Hello,

I've read a lot of *obviously reasonable* recommendations stating that any video card higher than GTX 750Ti paired with this CPU is overkill and destined to get bottlenecked.

Okay, fine. However, I'm on the verge of setting up a system with CPU upgrade to i5 in mind. Until then, I want to squeeze as much as I could from CPU and Mobo so as to allocate it to GPU.

With this mindset, is it still too much to pair a G3258 and GTX 770 ?

Thank you.

I'd either save more money till you can just get the i5 outright . You're spending good money on a gtx 770, I wouldn't cheap out with a dual core nowadays. Drop to a 760 or even 660 or 750ti (or r9 270/270x/280...) and just get the i5 to begin with, even if you get a cheaper locked one and an h97 mobo or h81 or w/e.

It would do decent in older titles but it would get increasingly bogged down in current and future stuff.

If you are into overclocking and looking to buy a -K (unlocked) i5 later on.
Yes, get the Pentium G3258. It's so much fun and performance for so little dollar.

My G3258 on 4,8 GHz is faster Single Threaded then ANY other consumer CPU. I have a R9 270X GPU now and it works fine.

CPU bottlenecks are an awful lot more complicated than they get credit for around this forum. It depends on the game you're playing: some games will run great with a G3258 and even a relatively high-end GPU. Some games with huge CPU workloads will continue to be CPU-limited even on i5's and i7's. I'd suggest you not worry too much about it, especially if you're going to drop in a Core i5 later on.

That said, a GTX 760 is a fine choice for mid- to high-end 1080p gaming. I'd recommend you look for a Radeon R9 280 or R9 285 instead, though the 760 is okay if you can get a much better deal on it.

hey what board do you have? im using an asus b85 pro gamer. and cant find a stable oc. can you tell me your bios settings? thanks!

GigaByte Z97P-D3. It's the cheapest Z97 board i could find. I only adjusted the voltage offset to + 0, 267 and increased the turbo core to 4,8 GHz and Uncore to 4,4GHz. I use regular Vengeance RAM on 1600 MHz.

I didnt touch the C-states and all the other energy saving features are ON. Only downside in adjusting the CPU voltage with Voltage Offset, when the CPU is in the lowest state @ 800MHz it doesnt go back to 0,8 volt but uses the extra offset, to 1,067 volt.
On 4,7GHz CPU doesnt get over 72C. 4,8 GHz temperature rises very fast to 81C Prime SmallFTT's.

Some B85 motherboards support the G3258 with latest BIOS. I've tried a ASUS H81 board but that was very unstablew.

well i dont really know how to tweak with an offset. basically that would translate to what volts?
and what is uncore? thanks!

The G3258 is stock at +/- 1,00 Volts. Set the CPU Core Voltage to Normal. Now you can set CPU Core Voltage Override / Offset to + 0,200 to about 0,400 V max.
Go to CPU UnCore Ratio and set this about 400 MHz lower then the CPU 1-Core and 2-Core Ratio.

For example:

I have a overclock with standard 100MHZ multiplier
40x multiplier Uncore
44x multiplier Cores (x2)
with a Voltage Offset with + 0,250.

Now the G3258 Dual CPU cores work on 4,4 GHz with a 4,0 GHz Uncore ( for memorycontroller , cache etc) on 1,250 Volts.

I hope your ASUS B85 board does have the latest BIOS version and does allow to tweak the multipliers.

woo thanks a lot! so it should have a gap of 4 always? im at 4.4 right now with uncore of 3.6. is that why it is not stable?

Intel Hasswell overclocking guides tell me to keep 300MHz between the Core and Uncore.
So its 41 Uncore and 44 Core !

EDIT: I dont think that larger 'gap' causes the instability, I have tried 32 Uncore and 47 Core and worked fine. Only thing was lower benchmark scores and slightly slower RAM.

Try to Disabled Spread Spectrum,
Loadline Calibration to Medium or Normal, not Extreme or High.
adjust or disabled some energy features , like EIST or EPU POWER technolgy or what its called with ASUS :)

Welp, now we have the new Maxwell GPU's. Go for a 970 4 gig. Heard the MSI Twin Frozr 5 is the best, most reliable due to 6 power phases, great cooler, and oc software. Not to mention it looks to badassed.

but it'll still be bottlenecked by the G3258..

All of this nonsense about "bottlenecking"...
There's no such thing as a hard bottleneck. Some games use multiple cores, some don't.
In games that only utilize 2 cores, the cpu is not going to be a bottleneck at all.
For games that are mostly gpu bound , the sky is the limit on which gpu you put in here!
Now, there is something to be said about how much money you should put into a budget build, but there are so many upgrade options with this build that it's a very good long term investment.
Stop trying to scare people with the bottleneck boogeyman.

I've seen videos of the pentium g3258 overclocked playing BF4 64man multiplayer very well with a decent gpu for 1080p settings like the gtx 660ti, it honestly shocked me. It might not be as much of a bottleneck as people would like others to believe as well. And in poorly threaded games and older stuff it would do amazingly well due to how very strong the haswell cores are. And for months now you can overclock even with the cheap h81 motherboards, you don't have to use the expensive z97 like others thought at first.

A little mini itx g3258 build with like a 750ti, or the regular gtx 750 when overclocked is a VERY underrated GPU, nobody talked about the regular 750 superclocked, it's not far from the 750ti at all, then with 8gb ram, and corsair builder 430w psu like the other person way above posted can be a very strong pc for not much money

Yes thats the truth, cheapest Z97 board gets my G3258 to 4,7 GHz stable. Together with a GTX 750 SuperClocked its a fantastic Bang for the Buck gaming PC.

Like Photonboy said, 1600MHz does work, since I just overclocked it today. running nice and cool at 47 on stock. will OC to 4.2 or 4.4 depending on temps. but 1600MHz works. ur not limited.
