I keep seeing people recommending 2 sticks of 256mb 3500 blah blah... So I was just wondering, would it run fine with just one stick? If so, in which slot would it be most efficient? And are those answers the same for all XMS speeds? (ie 3500 vs. 3200 etc)

I want to order some XMS ram and I'd rather not have to wait until it arrives next week to find out that it won't run on a single DIMM...

Thanks,
Paul

People keep recommending 2 stick for this mobo because it is a dual-channel DDR board (basically it uses 2 sticks as 1 to double the available memory bandwidth).

So to answer your question, it will run fine with 1 stick of whatever DDR ram you want (pc2100, pc2700, pc3200, pc3500), but it won't even come close to its total potential if you only use 1 stick.

Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

Just in case you haven't heard already, you'll need to set the bios memory timings to agressive on the A7N8X to get that board to work with Corsair XMS memory. Otherwise the thing keeps saying that it failed a memory test.

You do have another DDR stick around, right? Because you'll need it to boot the machine and get into the bios to change those settings.

Uh oh... Well, I have 2 sticks of 256MB Mushkin PC2700 (CL 2.5) in MY computer (this computer w/ the A7N8X/XMS I'm building is for my brother).

Hmm... Will I be able to use my Mushkin? If so, what configuration should I use? One Mushkin stick? Two sticks? One Mushkin stick and one XMS? And which slot(s)?

And for when I get it working (hopefully...), which settings do I have to change exactly?

nevermind, found my own answers, (thanks guys)

for you guys having the same problems, read this thread (long!!)

I was just scrolling through that site..

Now im even more confused!!!

That guy said to get the memory to work , he had to use Different memory first, change the settings... and THEN! put in the pc3200 memory? WTF!

i aint buying 2 different memories to get this [-peep-] to work, i am buying 1 GB of pc3200 corsair xms.. and now from reading that it says i have to buy a lower quality memory to get into the bios so i can get the pc3200 to work???

Does anybody have the asus nforce 2 board.. using Pc3200 Corsair XMS.. or used the Pc2700 memory..

was there any problems and what did you have to do?

Is THG Slightly Slacking??

Does anyone here have the Asus nForce2 pc2700 or the pc3200 corsair xms? if you did .. was there any problems getting this combination to work?

did these memories both let you access the bios so you can set it to aggressive timeing to get it to work?

Is THG Slightly Slacking??

also on newegg, there are a bunch of types of Xms.. reguarding the Heat spreaders.. ther are different types...are some of them better then others? or there basically the same?

Is THG Slightly Slacking??

Heatspreaders are all about the same. And you wont need other DDR ram to change the timings, I'm running an a7n8x right now with 2 sticks of corsair3200 and it booted up fine without the memory timings on agressive.

really? thanks alot man..

So you put in your 2 sticks of Pc3200 corsair XMS, and it booted fine, without changing anything in the bios?

Is THG Slightly Slacking??

I'm pretty sure the error has to do with what BIOS version
is present. The G version fixes that problem. That's what
mine shipped with last week and my PC3200 Corsair XMS 512mb
worked right away with no errors.

thanks alot man, i will be getting my board tuesday, so i guess it's shipped out with the good BIOS? did you order from Newegg.com also?

Is THG Slightly Slacking??

I have set a system up with this memory and board config. Yes, there is a problem with the default JEEDEC settings on the XMS PC3200 C2 ram (it defaults to C3). Because of this the board won't even post.Spare ram is not needed to fix this problem. All you need to do is reset the bios, then go in and set the memory settings to user defined. I set mine to 5,2,2,2 and it runs great.

yeah that's what i been hearing from alot of people...

lanzek.. when did you get your hardware..

because the new boards are shipping with the better bios, and will fix the problem. so i just ordered from newegg, and hopefully it's the good bios version.

I've got the same setup as Lanztek but the timings are set
to 3,2,2,2 and it runs great.

Lots of great info here. Thanks Guys.

Do you mean by 'I just got the A7N8X deluxe and 2 256MB Corsair 3200C2 v1.1'

That the ram is version 1.1 or the motherboard is revision 1.1. I suspect you mean the motherboard but I am not sure.

I'm about to order this exact stuff and I want to get it right.

THanks

It may say I'm a NOOB but I've been hiding in the shadows @ THG since 97.

I have had my A7N8X for a while, and it booted fine with the corsair xms stuff IIRC. I was just wondering, what is exactly the latest bios, and should i flash to it? I keep reading about all these different bios versions, but what is the latest and does it have any advantages.
