FWIW, lately, I discovered two solutions to problems I'd been having with my
Inspiron 8600.
1. Sometimes, XP was reporting no disk in the cd-rw drive. I discovered that
after running Sonic Record software, and bringing up the drive, all went well
and the disk was seen again. I also found an updated driver for the drive, an
Hitachi LG Data Storage, DMOD, GCC-4241 NA100 on the support.dell.com site,
and installed it. Don't know if that will help.
2. Sometimes, my usb devices were not being detected, especially when I
hot-plugged them in. I simply went to the Control
Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manger panel, selected Ports, and ran a *Scan for
new Devices*. And, voila, the usb devices were seen again!
Hope this helps.

"Yes, I do recognize it now. It is the most wonderful
thing I ever heard of; by a long shot the most
wonderful - and unexpected."
