Hi all,

I have a Radeon 32 Mb SDR and 3D performance is oky for now(I'm not a hard gamer). The problem with this card is: the little fan on the gpu is very noisy (it spinnig too fast or it a cheap fan...)

I use to play DVD movie on my system, playing some game (Grand prix 3 and Black and white are my lastest buy) and I want to do video editing. So I don't really know what is the best shot...

a) I could buy a video card with descent 3D power and another card for video editing.
b) I could buy a new Radeon AIW 8500, but only if that card is quiet !!!
c) I could unplug the fan on the current card and see what happen... And buy a second card for video editing.

Any other suggestion ?

Noisy? That sounds strange. Are you sure the noise is coming from the graphics card? Are you sure it's not your CPU cooler?

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

Maybe the fan is dirty. I have a video card that make a lot noise after a year of usage. After I clean the fan with compressed air the fan make less noise.

No, I'm sure that it is the fan on the gpu that make the noise. It's a little fan that is spinning too fast... I bought the card in the end of 2000. The fan is clean (no dust).

I just want to know what if others with the same ATI radeon card have the same problem. And, what could be the best buy for what I wanna do with my computer (please sse above).

Thanx

I've been using a Radeon AIW and it doesn't really make any noise at all (maybe I'm not paying any attention? Can you hear it all the time or only when you listen for it?) About the video cards, I'd say I would probably get a Radeon 8500 and a Firewire (IEEE1394) card or if your budget is more relaxed a GF4 Ti4400 instead of the 8500. I for one don't really like ATi cards after the bad problems with the drivers. Have you had many problems. If not I'd go for the 8500 cause it's cheaper or maybe wait for a bit and get a 8800 (RV250). I dunno, but I think the main thing that the 8500AIW cost is in the TV tuner? Maybe not. AIW cards tend to have pretty good video editing software and stuff.

The 8500 is quite quiet. Get the AIW 8500DV, and it will do everything you need and probably more. I'd recomend going with the 128 MB version, as I've heard that's been clocked higher than the older AIW 8500DV

Bad trolls Bad trolls... Whacha gonna do... Whacha gonna do when they post here too...

If your happy with the 3D performance of your card just get a fire wire card. If you need to capture from sources other than Fire wire (IEEE1394) then you probably want a higher end card than a Radeon 8500DV, at least if you want to be able to output back to tape and maintain any quality. Two very nice cards that support analog and DV capture are the Matrox RT2500 and the Pinnacle Systems DV500.
I don't need to capture form analog sources so I simply have a Pinnacle Systems Studio DV which cost me around $100, but can now be had for $60 for retail box version from multiwave direct. I've captured, edited, and output back to VHS tape with exceptional quality. I did several school projects, and even parts of my senior video on my PC.
It was fun to make my puny computer that cost under $1000 turn out better work than our $10,000 Casablanca NLE machines

If my response is brief and vague its because the info you provided is too!
