[citation][nom]Device Unknown[/nom] p.s. Did he even have family? Are they ok? I never heard anything about his personal life (never cared)[/citation]
He is survived by a wife and 3 kids I believe, one of which was from a previous marraige

The first computer at my home was an Apple II my father allowed me to play with.

Steve Jobs was a visionary, but a very practical producer who payed special attention to the human being as a fluid user. I hope this halt moment of reflexion will give us all the good will to understand what the real problems and challenges we are facing today and will face tomorrow.

Rest in peace Steve Jobs.

while I am sorry he died I do need to point out apple's fascist policies under his leadership.

From back in the 80's not allowing any other software company to program for their computer to today's issues with them not honoring your warranty if you smoke next to your computer. It was Jobs' fault that the mac lost the war for the home user. Sticking with the power pc cpu for what 20 years? Then when they finally gave in and started using intel cpus (and IIRC there was a rumor there were going to be AMD based macs too) their OS was changed to a hacked version of debian linux. Then they put their intel cpu and standard pc hardware into a box of their design and they charge 50% more for their product.

They "reinvented" the phone but refuse to allow you to delete more than one email at a time.

They are an american company but get all their parts made in china at a plant where they work people so hard they are committing suicide over it. So they use cheap chinese labor on their pc hardware and hacked version of a free OS and charge you how much?

And people flock to buy their stuff why?

So Jobs' death while saddening may signal the end of their ludicrous policies towards pricing, programming, and their own users. When they have to satisfy their customers instead of Jobs' visions they might listen to us a little more. Hopefully anyway.

Wow, quite pathetic how many comments are getting deleted that aren't even offensive or insulting, presumably just because they're not blubbering "RIP" posts. Is actual discussion of how this will affect Apple or the tech industry forbidden?

should just show you how much they favor apple's products even though almost everything they post news about doesnt involve a mac... iphone, ipad, ipod sure.... but an actual mac not so much.

I don't understand why the ban-hammer needs brought out...people being disrespectful on a subject like this will quickly get downvoted into oblivion.

RIP Steve! You have run your race with true conviction and heart and forever left your mark.

you mean like you did to my post? Apparently you cant say anything bad about the almighty Jobs even in death... maybe you should read my post a little more carefully.

While I have had my own rants against MS and Apple (more on MS than Apple) - but getting older and more mature, its easy to give due respect where it is due.

Steve Jobs, is one of many who pioneered the computer industry into what we have today. Lets not forget the others who have passed, they might not have had the spot-light of Jobs, but they were still important.

But, Steve Jobs has stayed close to the industry and market more than anyone else, being hands on. We might not agree with his opinion, his statements or his company - but HE did rescue Apple, he did create things we enjoy today and many others have tried to replicate.

Steve jobs will be remembered for geneations.. and if mankind make it into hundreds of years from now, he may still be known.

What? Perhaps you have mistaken me for someone else...

Even if I hate you to the bone, you did what you think must be done, how evil it may be. You're one for the history books.

RIP Steve Jobs

Although I hated Mr Job in life I hope he rests in peace. Hopefully the setback he unleashed for the march of open standards in technology will soon also come to pass. One thing I thank Mr Jobs for is for making me and many smart observers realize that hype can be more valuable than substance; and that for very many people casing is more valuable than content.

I have to say, as much as I hated how Steve ran Apple and while I still loathe the company he raised from the ashes, his illness was certainly painful and I feel for his family and friends.

Damn, and I was planning on dressing up as Mr. Jobs for Halloween. So much for that.

On a serious note, thank you Mr. Jobs for all that you have contributed to the tech industry, and the world. Take care of yourself.

We have truly lost a visionary in Steve Jobs. He will be missed. I have never been a fan of Apple products; but just because I was not a purchaser of Apple products does not mean Steve Jobs did not shape the rest of the technology industry. Between Apple and Pixar, Steve Jobs truly gave it his all and changed the world. Rest in peace.

Please lets avoid the PC vs. Apple debate just this once. RIP Steve and thank you for your contributions to our society.

I'm not sure what killed Steve Jobs, but lots of fanboys are insisting it couldn't have been a virus.

But all kidding aside Steve was more important to the tech world then all but a few people. He drove the style of the tech world for years. Its very socking that he is gone. RIP

Not at all. You are welcome to discuss the impact of Jobs death on the tech industry and Apple. But I will ban and remove all insensitive commentary not germane to the discussion. That includes disparaging remarks about the deceased. Here at Tom's, we follow the ages old tenet of civility "De mortuis nihil nisi bonum". That is, do not speak ill of the dead.

So again, please, keep it civil and keep it respectful, friends.

Regardless of my views on how Apple walled in it's users one has to admit that the approach worked and created computers that just worked with very little fuss and required no special wizardy to run fast as all hell for years on end. Even if I think that most Apple users are not as technologically minded I have to hand it to Steve for making the computer a demystified item and something that everyone could easily use regardless of age or any other thing. The man was a true visionary to both the computer and film industries and will be missed.

[citation][nom]wlachan[/nom]This will mark the end of Apple's golden era.[/citation]

Knowing how the Illuminati is they will eventually start sucking this company dry before to long a little at a time. I really do like some of their products though despite their flaws and intentional limitations they did get some things right.
