Hmm, which 280x brand-cooler would you recommend? Been doing some research about this and have decided for a Sapphire Vapor-X or Tri-X whichever I can get a better deal

I have a Gigabyte Windforce 280x OC Rev 1. No overheating, no artifacts and it mops the floor with the 770 in BF4.

Like virtually all video cards, there are some that do have issues. By painting a broad brush about the 280x all you've done is revealed your bias without evidence. I'm biased too, and readily admit it because I did own a 770 for the first few weeks after BF4 was released and it was barely playable because of crappy Nvidia drivers. They have since improved, but now with Mantle there is no comparison between a 280x and a 770 in BF4.

OP: If you made custom config changes to the user.cfg or PROF_SAVE file directly, that can cause artifacts as well. If you did, then delete the files. Also, use DDU to uninstall old drivers. It is possible you received a used card that was abused by GPU miners and returned. It could be your card is defective, but don't automatically assume.

I also have a i7 4770k with a Gigabyte Windforce 280x; it is an excellent combination. Many don't like it because the voltage is locked, but I don't OC the GPU so they last a long time and no need for $$ cooling. My HD6970 is still going strong after 4 years.

It certainly was not a mistake getting a 280x. Those saying that have likely never owned one and right away they recommend nVidia. Well, there's nothing wrong with nVidia, but don't expect to get the same performance dollar for dollar in BF4, and there are defective nVidia cards too.

My 280x w/i7 4770k. Zavod 311. It is locked at 75 FPS. below is the video and raw stats using BF4 Frame Time Analyzer however I began recording frame times before starting the video recording hence the Low Min FPS. The actual Min FPS is >60 when filtering it out.
This one is recorded @720p to the hdd using Action! so the video quality may not be quite as nice. The SSD was full.

I have Asus R9 280x DCII Top. but it only shows artifacts when the card gets hot for a long period of time(like 2 or 3 hours of continuous 85+ degrees).
Try to keep the temperatures under control by using proper ventilation, that might help.
