Right guys,

Sorry to start another thread regarding this card as I know there are plenty of threads over the internet but I can't seem to find an answer

I am getting the black screen randomly, even when just surfing my desktop.
It sometimes happen frequently or it will not happen at all.

Does anybody have any information on what is going on ? will it just be a driver problem or will it be an actually hard-ware related? Because I am in two minds of whether to send this card back and get another or will I sit with the same problem?

Just so you know, the card temp on idle is about 29c on load its about 55-60

Kind regards

James

So sorry mate,

it's ASUS Z87 PRO
8GB CORSAIR VENGENCE
750W 80+ PSU
I5 4670k
120SSD
1TB SATA

I tried 14.1 drivers then I am currently on 13.12 which it seems everybody has tried this solution and still get the problem.
The card is on silent mode, via the switch at the moment ... will not even post using the Uber mode

thanks!

using i-graphics it's fine never get any boot issues or what ever so. But the black screen can just happen randomly when using the card.

it's the Aerocool Templarius 750W 80+ silver

Well I am debating on if it is the psu tbh, after seeing all the threads regarding the R9 series cards.

Well I could be just selecting my computer, surfing the net and it black screens and all i have to do is turn the display off and on again and it's back to where It was. if it doesn't crash and its just a connection loss there wouldn't be a crash log right? I have tried different cables and monitors also still the same problem.

Like i mentioned I'm just in a dilemma of is it a card issue or a driver issue? do I rma and get replacement and get same problem? I have read many other people have done this and are in this situation.

thanks for your prompt replies

Sorry for double posting.

Right I have figured out why I am getting intermittent black screens, it's due to the refresh rate set on my TV/Monitor if it gets set higher than 30hz the black screen starts to flicker on and off, but when at 30hz I get no problems.

My TV is capable of 60hz as my old card did it with no problem but the question is, is this a hard-ware error or driver issue do you think? I am HDMI TO HDMI and have used DVI to HDMI same problem.

Kind regards

so i figured out the best way to fix this and theres a couple of things that you should do if you get this problem with the r9 290s. 1 do not rma your card theres no point your going to get the same card with the same problem until amd gets there act together. 2 make sure that your card is getting enuff power. do not use a cord that has a 6 and a 8 pin in the same line thats not enough power. 3 this is the main problem. your vram threshold is 85C but your card can get up to 95C so you black screen. one way to fix this problem is down clock your Vram and yes i know it sucks but it works. i have mine clocked at 1000hz or what ever and normally its like 1250 or so. that's a big difference but it really helps. 4 and last speed your fan up. the max right now it will go with the latest drivers is 45% i believe but i have mine set to 65% all the time and my card sits at 55 all the time now. doing all of these things i do not black screen! i just recorded me playing call of duty ghosts on ultra at 60fps constant so even with that down clock there's no lag so don't worry over it. until amd fixes this or tells everyone who bought this card that they screwed up nothing is going to change. hope this helps!
