r9-290x or the gtx 970?

I'm aware that most people would tell me that a gtx 970 is more worth it. But, what I want to know is, will the sapphire r9-290x tri-x oc for $294 dollars be performing as well as a gtx 970 ftw acx 2.0 for $339? It consumes a lot of power, but with the sapphire 290x run cooler with the same amount of strength as the gtx 970 ftw? If there's a better version of the r9 290x or gtx 970 that I could get for around $300 please comment what you would recommend. Thanks!

290x is faster but also much more power hungry. the tri-x cooler keeps is decently cooled compared to the standard

At resolutions of 1440p and below the 970 tends to win out. At 4k the 290x pulls ahead but at that resolution you would probably want to SLI/crossfire any ways. The 970 uses less energy, cooler, more quiet.

Alright, i'll probably be getting the gtx 970 ftw then. I don't imagine in the next 5 years i'll be upgrading my monitor to a much higher resolution. Thank you everyone!
