I've recently bought a Gigabyte R9 380X card and am unable to install the video drivers for it. Whenever I try to install the drivers from the disc that came with it, it goes through the installation process and restarts. But when I go to play a game on Steam the game crashes to desktop and I get an error message.I've tried installing newer drivers but to no avail.

I'm relatively new to all of this so if I didn't include something that was important let me know and I'll get to it asap. Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

Its called AMD Crimson "Radeon Settings" see this video clip: -

After you have installed all the software/drivers in Device Manager it should NOT say 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter' this means the device has NOT been fully recognised and the drivers (from AMD) are NOT installed.

It is just using the basic Windows VGA fallback driver - which won't support the GPU properly (so you won't be able to play any games).

Device Manager should say something like 'Radeon 300 Series etc.' NOT 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter' if the device is fully recognised and the correct drivers have installed.

Perhaps it is a Windows issue. Certainly try to update Windows 7 as fully as possible (if you don't...

this is half the answer

I would download the latest Radeon Crimson drivers from the amd website. those drivers on that DVD are probably 3 years old.

I've done as you've instructed but I'm still having the same issue.
I still have the 5770. Also when I went to install the drivers I was only shown two items: HDMI Audio Driver and AMD install manager. There should be more shouldn't there?

I've replaced the 380X with the 5770, installed the latest drivers and am running into the same issues I had with the 380X.

My PSU is a Antec TP-750 blue.

After removing every trace of AMD/Radeon software and drivers from your PC did you download the new software suite and drivers from this web page?

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

I recently upgraded my second rig from an Nvidea card to an R9 380X. It uses Windows 10 however, not 7.

After swapping out the card, I removed all traces of anything Nvidea first (including any software suites) then I rebooted and downloaded everything from AMD's website and never touched the CD that came with the card.

Other than the installer crashing the first time I tried (!) I had no trouble. I wonder if it is an issue with Windows 7 not handling the driver side properly and not refreshing from the old AMD card....

Have you tried looking at DEVICE MANAGER (right click on My Computer > Properties > Device Manager > Display Adapter > right click and Scan For Hardware Changes > right click and Update Driver Software etc.) to ensure everything refreshes with the new correct driver?

Yes, I downloaded from the site you linked. Correct me if I'm wrong but by "suite" you mean "Catalyst Control Center" right?

I've swapped back in the 380X and installed the latest drivers after uninstalling the 5770's drivers and removing anything else I could find relating to it. I opened up device manager, scanned for hardware changes and driver software updates but it didn't change from "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

Also, would upgrading to Service Pack 2 or 3 make any difference? I'm using Service Pack 1 right now or should I just upgrade to Windows 10 if I were to bother upgrading at all?

Good luck!

Solution

After attempting to update Windows 7 with no success I decided to update to Windows 10. After finishing installing, the drivers for the card seemed to be automatically installed and I was able to set higher resolutions, use both my monitors separately, watch videos and my games seem to run just fine.

Device Manager is reading "AMD Radeon (TM) R9 380 Series" now instead of "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

I'd say my problem is resolved. Thank you to everyone who helped, gave suggestions, were patient with me and for making my first time on here one to remember. If I ever run into any issues I can't figure out on my own I'll know where to come!
Just gotta hope nothing bad comes from windows 10 now.Hahaha!

Great news :)

Looks like Windows 7 doesn't always work well with the latest drivers/software for Radeon cards. I upgraded to Win 10 straight away so haven't had to deal with Win 7 in quite a while or any issues of that nature.

As for Windows 10 itself, apart from the new Start Menu which annoyed me to begin with.... I have no issues so far and it performs well in gaming from my experience. Win 10 also supports DX12 which is going to become the API of choice for most devs in the future and existing Radeon cards seems to perform well with it already.

Enjoy the new card. The R9 380X is a very capable card at 1080P 60Hz, I am very happy with mine so far (just don't mention DOOM :sarcastic: !)

Glad we could help you out 😀
