R9 390 Power Supply?

Hi all,

I'm currently running an R9 390 on a 1000W PSU, and obviously that's fine.

My brother has a gtx 760 and wants to get a 390, but he only has a 600W PSU, the EVGA 600B. It has 49 amps on the 12V, and I've heard the 390 uses 50 amps, but I'm not sure.

Will it run on that PSU? Does it matter if the amps are 1 off what it says it needs? I don't know a whole lot about power supplies.

Thanks!

It could, but it would be advisable to run the system on stock settings. With the 4690k he could probably OC a little without too much concern, since the 4690k doesn't consume much power at stock settings.

4690k wattage use at idle/loaded.
It should work, but if he is going to have an FX 8350 or other 125w+ CPU that he wants to OC, then I would say at least 650 or better to be on the safe side. Like I said earlier, if he doesn't plan on OC'ing anything, he should be fine with the 600w PSU.

He has an overclocked 4690k im pretty sure. He doesn't want a 200 series card because of directx12. What happens if he gets the 390 and the psu isnt enough? Will it damage anything?

Yeah you could say that for the GTX 680/GTX 770 too or many others on both sides. The 390x has 8 gb's of Vram, but unless you have a bunch of texture packs/4k gaming, it probably doesn't matter that much. The Fury/FuryX is where it is going to be at (I hope). Benchmarks will tell the story, when they come out.

What sort of wattage on a power supply would I be looking for if I was looking at crossfire?

The link above tells you...

Hi Everyone,

Just figured id put in my two cents as i have a corsair GS600 (600W) PSU and have recently purchased a Sapphire Nitro R9 390 and have updated all the drivers and i have no problems... until i am about to enter a game world. I tried with GTA 5, The Crew, and Dark Souls 2: Scholar. the games launch fine but as soon as im about to load into the world my entire pc shuts down. after 3 fails i checked the cards box to see what it recommended and right there in bold letters is "750W PSU(or greater)". so its back to the store to upgrade to a 1000W just to be safe.

To anyone saying you can run a R9 390 on a 600W PSU can you please stop getting peoples hopes up

Idk man I'd say getting the 390 (even the non X version) is a good move because of its Future Compatibility as more and more games that are coming out are taking using more and more Vram then they are CPU power

I think you may be over-estimating how much VRAM is actually needed during a game at max settings. If you game at 1080p, you'll never use even 4GB... from my experience, anyway. I have been monitoring VRAM usage on the rig in my sig with several of my games recently. I have yet to break the 2GB barrier. But maybe I just don't play the right games.

750W is for headroom in case people decide to use a bad psu... While I wouldn't say a GS600 is bad, I've seen builds run an R9-390 rig using Seasonic's 620W S12/M12 series and Corsair's CX600. Point being, you must be drawing a lot more power in other parts of your rig (lights, pcie cards, OC'ed AMD cpu), besides the GPU.

You're the biggest [censored] talker ever, so you're saying your 970 3.5gb vram never went over 2gb? You must be playing tetris.

I kinda have to agree with this sentiment. Recent games that have come out are targeting 3 GB and 4 GB at 1080p. I've seen my Vram over 2 GB all the time. The 970 will only get slower over time as well. We already know that it performs poorly compared to the AMD equivalent when it comes to resolutions higher than 1080p and when textures are larger. In addition, almost all AMD cards (dating back to the 7000 series) have better DX 12 support. I would also like to point out that Nvidia does not support last gen cards well. The 780, nvidia's flagship last year, is already looking slower than a 290 or even a 280x. Both cards are half the price.

You guys need to tell me what you are monitoring your VRAM usage with. I use HWinfo64 and it never showed my VRAM usage go beyond 2GB. Maybe I just don't play the right games.

Sorry for the name calling.

Yes, that 600W psu should work as long as it has at least 30A on the 12V+ rail. See psu minimums here:

hi. i am getting the gpu sapphire r9 390 and i cant decide which psu i need.. you say minimum 550-600.. a psu of 750 80+ bronze is good enough? my system is i5 4460, msi z97s sli krait edition 1 ssd samsung 850 evo and 2 hdd.i was looking for 850 or 1000 watt gpu but i think it is too much... thanks for your response
