Hello Guys.
I'm going to work with 1440p and also game play. What is better to buy? Fury X or 390X.
Fury X is more expensive. Worth it to overpay for HBM?!

Solution

I would split the difference and go with the R9 Fury (non-x) for about $500. The 390x at around $450 is too close in price to the Fury for me to consider it a good price to performance option. For AMD cards I look at the 390 and the Fury. I skip the 390x and Fury X.

The reason I skip the Fury X is because you can get a 980 Ti for about the same price and I think it's a better card. It has 6GB of VRAM and it usually outperforms the Fury X.

Edit: I just realized the OP's question was asked back in December so my answer probably isn't very helpful. This thread was...
The Fury X may be more expensive but it comes with new an insane 4096 bit memory bus. If you can the Fury X you will future proof your PC and even allow you to progress to 2-4K resolution.
In 4K the Fury X will get around 30-40 fps but at 2K it should hit around 70+ fps

Then is better Fury X to buy. But what about 4GB HBM vs 8GB GDDR?

I'm In the same boat bro, I keep trying to figure out if I should get the Fury X or 2 390x's, for 4k, or 1440. I just don't know how hot 2 390x's would get. I have read that the 8gb isn't really 8 because the rest of the gpu cant handle 8gb memory. I want liquid cooled so ill probably get the fury x because those 390x's will probably make me sweat down my butt crack, maybe.... this will be my first build.

I was on the same boat but then i went with the r9 390x devil hybrid. Runs all my games fine on ultra 1440p freesync'd black ops 3 63-88 fps digitaltechfoundries watch their youtube link. just remember amd will *announce* greenland gpu's within next year.

Nope, I'm playing Rise of The Tomb Raider Max settings at 2k on a Sapphire Fury and getting average 40fps, its not optimised for AMD yet...

40 fps isnt very good though

if you are thinking of the fury, you should be looking at the better 980 ti anyways

nice necro though XD

980ti is too expensive for the little boost in FPS, also its hotter and I have a Freesync monitor and don't like monopolies...

Nvidia only pulls ahead in ROTTR because they are optimised for it and have their Gameworks tentacles all inside it.

I'm happy with the performance I get, the 980ti also has good performance, but I am also planning on getting a second GPU, and in Crossfire at 4k the Furys rape 980ti's, and one can just as well or better at 2k as a 980ti in most games.

all of what you said, beside the monopoly deal and the monitor, is silly

the 980 ti always wins regardless, especially after overclocking it

it is quite a bit better than a fury, the difference is not small

I respect your opinion, but Meh... Price to performance wise I think the Fury gets ahead, it overclocks like crap, but AMD can easily release drivers that inject steroids into the Fury line when they feel its safe, Because of HBM and new tech and all. And it runs very cool, the overclocked 980ti's get too hot when overclocked, and in many games(the ones without Gameworks tentacles inside them) they are on par at 2k and 4k, but in crossfire get beat pretty decently, especially at 4k. But yeah you can overclock the 980ti a lot more, and it has 2gb more, but the Fury has HBM, and that's a different case, it can process information, and transfer data faster because of HBM and the memory being right on the die and not having to travel a longer distance like the 980ti's Gddr5 memory. And also again drivers will improve upon the Fury, the 980ti doesn't have any head room left.

I was at first going to get a 980ti SC, then realized how big of a monopoly they are becoming, and getting into games with Gameworks to purposely make AMD look worse. And Freesync monitors do the same exact thing but are $100 cheaper, so an extra Benjamin to spend on a GPU.

What size monitor are you running? 2560x1440?
