Torn on final decision for a video card.

With the price difference being around $200-250 more for a 3080 over the 6800 XT, is the return there or is a matter of fanboying nvidia and pulling hairs on end performance?

6800XT can be had for $525-550

The 3080 seems to be about $750 and beyond.

Current setup that I am replacing uses an RX Vega 64 8gb card, and I really never had an issue. I've used Radeon cards for probably the last 10 years based on price.

AMD is winning the price war. Nvidia ensures to cripple all their cards but the xx90 series as far as vram goes. I simply cannot see paying that much money for a card that is crippled in the vram department. I'm sure they do this intentionally so you will upgrade sooner. That's just not what I'm looking for in such an expensive graphics card. It would be different if they were near equal in price for performance. Ray tracing just isn't there yet for me. It's not worth an extra 30-50% in price.

Thanks guys.

Thats the exact mindset I was in. I just cant see paying such an insane premium for a minimal return. I am not the type who is gaming for 25 hours a day on ultra anyway.

Since you are familiar with the radeon graphics world, that is probably the way to go.
Pick, preferably on tests for YOUR games.
Do not pick on specs.
For example Nvidia uses vram differently so just comparing vram is not good judgement.

If you anticipate ever gaming at 4k resolution, a 3080 class card would be appropriate.
If you have the funds, buy the stronger card.
The pain of a higher price for the better card will be short lived.

OTOH, second guessing by buying the cheaper option lasts much longer.

6700xt owner here. I’m happy with my card. It seems to do well at 1440p. Not sure what resolution you use. Since you were considering up to 750, let me throw one other option out.

670 gets you a 6900xt, so in 3090 territory. With all the new cards coming out the higher end model should be relevant longer. If you are at 1440p, the 6800xt should be a great option though. As I said my 6700xt does decently for the most part.

Even at 4k, the gap isn't huge, between the 6800xt and faster cards, vs the cost for that extra FPS.
