someone might be able to tell me the finer points like what the software interface on this card is like or the performance.

Where do you intend to fit that card ??? it's 64bit PCI!
I am no expert but look for something more recent with PCI Express.
Those cards are really expensive, you know that?

Go with the PCI-Express 2320 if you have the slot and money. I have one with 4 320GB WD drives in RAID5 and it is nearly as fast at reads as my RAID0 with 2 samsung spinpoint 2504c's. The bios interface is simple, very straightforward and easy to use. The windows utility is either a seperate program or a web based one so you can use it from any machine on your network. I also have a 1640 for a simple mirror array, faster than onboard raid (except NVRAID) but no where near as quick as the 2320. The 18xx series doesn't offload XOR like the 23xx series so it won't be as quick with RAID5. 1 and 0 won't make a difference though.

The 2320 is PCI-e 4x, it will run in a 4x size slot that only runs at 1x (very common) but it's worth it to have a board that actually has 4x running at 4x.

Areca ARC-1120 (8prt), Areca ARC-1230 (12prt), new ones from 3Ware: 9590SE-8ML , 9590SE-12ML and I think LSI has some new PCIe SATA RAID cards too.

PCI-X, costly mobo, poorer performance due to being half-duplex.
Can't match the performance/$ of PCIe if you add it all up.
