Hello. I have an old HP Z 400 workstation, and need to add a lot more ram as it only came with (3) 1gb sticks. The current sticks are HP part number HP 500208-563. I have researched this and some are saying this is registered ram, and others not. I thought this machine only took unregistered memory so it is odd. Clarification would be very helpful. Thank you.

HP sometimes had ram that worked outside of the official specs. Unfortunately the HP part number you posted doesn't have any clear information either as I can't find an actual picture of this module.

What is the "PC3..." description on your existing ram?

The HP Z 400 workstation is a XEON system.

That system use this kind of RAM below.
DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMM PC3-10600E Dual Rank
Yes, thank you. That mostly describes the ram that is in there except it does not clarify U or R. Most places I have looked online show it as registered memory, but again I cannot get a definitive answer, and from my other research the later model z400 with the 6 dimm slots only takes unbuffered... Very odd.

Not always--my z420 uses a xeon and is using registered memory no problem. It depends on the motherboard and it's limitations as most xeon processors support ecc reg.

Thank you both very much for your help. Can you let me know what motherboard your Z420 has? It would be great if the one I have would also be able to utilize registered ram as it is more cost effective. Thanks again.

I don't know if the z420 will be a direct swap to the z400 as they were different sockets. I have the older bootblock version 1 motherboard, but I don't know what the exact part number is. I found the following part numbers on hp partsurfer and I'd look at the pictures in ebay listings to see which one might be the same as what I have:
619557-001
619557-601
708615-001
