RAM FOR CACHE

As i know,,, There is an old theory says that each 1 MegaByte of memory should have some KB of Cache.

If i got more MegaByte the performance will reduced. One of my friends feels afraid to put 1024 MegaByte in His Internet server becuase the Cache is only 256 Kb.

That would be true if every MB of main memory had to have a page in cache. However, that usually isn't the case.
(I'm trying to come up with a nice explanation without typing out long technical dribble)

Hmm.. lets just say your friend doesn't have anything to worry about The cache can address over 4GB of memory (if its 32-bit address registers). Your better off getting the RAM in there because a page load from the swap file is far far more expensive in CPU time than a cache miss and fetch from main memory.

what that meens is for optimal praformance u need so much cache per ram but wont affect the system in anyways its just for max praformance.

how much Memory can be used by WIN98 or 2000 for Swap-files or how about a RAM-Disc???

i already said win98 or ME will use 512 but if you want to go over that use win2000 or cacheman 4.0 or higher, since its suppost to resalve the over 512 meg issue with 98 versons of windows. 2000 can handle 4 to 64 gigs or ram depending on the verson u have. nad more ram is better then faster ram to a point of course. if u have pc-100 at least and want to be able to run more apps at once and have the hard drive not accessed as much more ram if your using simms i would go get a new pc-133 board. in any even more ram will always speed up the system adn stop it from getting sluggish when you leave it on or run big programs and multi tast. but ram isnt your ownly bottleneck. your system will be as fast as its slowest interface. and if your talking about solid state hard drives (ram disk?) then thats perfect for vurtual ram insted of letting windows use your hard drive get a 2gig or more solid state hard drive (they run at 100mhz last time i saw and its jsut as good as ram. and will speed up your system even more.
