RAM memory of around 6GB/8GB with Dual core intel processor

I want to upgrade my system hardware. Right now i'm using a system with 2GB RAM, 3GHz intel's Dual core processor.
With this processor can i upgrade my system's RAM memory to around 6GB/8GB? How will be the performance?

how about a 32 bit pc??....

I would not suggest going to 32 bit since it has inherent disadvantages. Like you can only use 3-4GB max RAM for it. Any thing additional will not even get detected.
