HI all,

I have the GE72MVR 7RG Apache Pro laptop (Intel HM175 & i7 7700HQ) which is now a few years old. I would like to upgrade the RAM if useful.

Laptop Specs:

Based on online search I have found that the motherboard supports max 32GB 2400mhz RAM.

The laptop already comes with dual channel 16Gb 2400MHZ RAM. Is there any point in upgrading to newer RAM if the max it will allow is 2400MHz. Maybe better timings but any useful performance increase? (Could it be possible to run faster MHZ ram even if max supported spec says 2400?)

My work is mostly Visual Studio, media and RPG, FPS gaming with little bit of VR usage.

Additional: The system comes with a samsung nvme gen 3 SSD 256gb which I am upgrading to Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB.

Hey,
The website clearly states that it can take DDR-4 2400 MHz only, since the board (HM175) lacks enabling XMP profiling, it most likely wont be able to run it at faster speeds.
However if you upgrade you need to swap the original ones too, as ram speed will always be as per the slowest one in the pair.

Also, from your use, you won't see any real world speed difference if you use faster RAM.
It's mostly for benchmarks

Yes, I know the 2400Mhz limit. I was wondering if I can take the old ram (runs at CL18) out and insert new 2x8gb 2400Mhz better performing ram (CL14..?).

If there is any advantage in it. If the effect is negligible, then I dont need to do that.
