I have an Asus AMD FX laptop. 8 GB of RAM built in. 1 slot for Expansion. My Handbook say Max 16 GB RAM.
Crucial system advisor says Max 20, and 4 GB built in. (I know its NOT that) Question: Can I install a 16 GB dimm?? Would it be worth the money $170. If I did??

Thank you,

Amount of installed RAM you actually get when new can vary depending on several factors: country it's shipped to from factory, specific model configuration etc.

But for the max supported RAM you should take the manufacturer's figure as the correct one (16GB)

Crucial says 20GB, but for a start that's a weird amount anyway -- max RAM is usually a figure that is exactly divisible by four - - 16GB is, 20GB isn't.
