Hello guys, I'm building a desktop that operating on the Asus Rampage II Extreme mobo. But when I ordered my RAM, the shop sales assistant warn me that for 2000Mhz RAM like the Kingston KHX16000D3K3/6GX can only be install on 3 slot(blue). I read the Asus QVL notes and came across the same thing. So, I forcefully go with 12Gigs of OCZ RAM running at 1600Mhz(since it is acceptable according to the QVL notes by Asus). My question is, is it possible for me to tweak my RAM later on and adjust it speed to be higher. And also, is there no mobo that supports 2000Mhz at 12gigs? Sorry for this stupid question guys and thanks a lot for your reply.

Here is my basic spec:

Asus Rampage II Extreme
Intel Core i7-975 Extreme
Asus ENGTX295
OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX60G SATA II for OS
Kingston KHX 160003ULT1K3-6GX(8-8-8-24) <--original choice
CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 1250W
WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA

The only way you can increase your RAM speed is through overclocking, and with things at the limit and your general unfamiliarity I wouldn't suggest it. Though you can read the stickies over at the overclocking section, and I'm sure people there would be willing to help you out. :)

In any case, why do you want to increase performance? Your rig is pretty powerful as it is.

Well, actually, I wish to have 12gigs @2000Mhz..but since its limited to 6gigs, I switched to 1600Mhz..but OCing 1600 to 1800 should be pretty easy right? I learn slowly..heh..so means that..up untill now, every mobo only support 6gigs for 2k Mhz rite?

Well, considering there are no games or programs that will use all 12 gb's of memory unless you are using this monster pc as a rendering station. . . there is no need to overclock it.

Also the I7's are very picky when it comes to memory, and that much memory being overclocked could put a large strain on the cpu.

Are you planning on using this comp for digital rendering or something like that? or did you build the best of the best just to say ya did and you could? Either way kudo's for a monster rig, but if you just use it for day to day stuff, you could have gotten the same performance for $1k less.

Well, actually is, rendering is one thing, since I'm an under grad in IT field..but I'm also a gamer..and since technology is like rapidly growing and there isn't really the "latest" word for any product in the market, I'm just building something that could at least last for a couple of years or so. Really confused about the RAM compatibility, so I post it here to get some help >.<

This is the full spec, the CPU cooler, PSU, and casing sux..I know >.<

Asus Rampage II Extreme
Intel Core i7-975 Extreme
Asus ENGTX295 -2way SLI(quad sli)
OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX60G SATA II -Raid 0 configuration for OS
Samsung 22X DVD-RW SATA
OCZ3P1600LV12GS 12Gig 1600Mhz -not sure bout this, might be change
CoolerMaster ATCS840 Transparent Side Panel
CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 1250W

I really don't know whether should I go for 6Gig 2000Mhz or 12Gig of 1600Mhz. Any recommendation on memory and my rig would be highly appreciated..thanks!
