Windows 10 21H1
Motherboard Z170-WS
32GB Ram Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666 C16 2x16GB
OS and program partitions on an Intel 750 series 1.2TB NVME drive
GPU Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB
Sandisk Ultra II 960GB
Toshiba X300 6TB
Corsair Force MP510 m.2 SSD 4TB
WD Red 4TB

I am getting multiple BSODs daily on an ASUS Z170-WS based system. I have tried using Whocrashed to pinpoint the issue but it is constantly throwing in the same generic error i.e.:

crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\080221-13750-01.dmp
uptime: 00:36:31
This was probably caused by the following module: ntkrnlmp.exe (nt!PspCatchCriticalBreak+0x10E)
Bugcheck code: 0xEF (0xFFFFB001D9A75140, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
Bug check description: This indicates that a critical system process died.
There is a possibility this problem was caused by a virus or other malware.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

I have replaced the graphics card and the PSU. I have moved the graphics card to a different slot and reseated both memory modules. I have gone into the BIOS and set the CPU and memory to its default speed. I have used DDU to remove the Nvidia graphics drivers and have installed the latest non-dch drivers. I have used Driver Easy to check and install all the latest drivers. Device Manager shows no issues.

I back-up daily. At one point I had a stable system but every time I tried to update any of the drivers it would make the system unstable. I was able to put the system back to a stable backup as the system and program drives are separate from the data drives. This worked for a while but now even that doesn't work.

In a previous post I got some suggestions that seemed to work - specifically updating to the latest BIOS 3602. This lasted for about 10 days. However, I had to temporarily install a ThunderboltEX 3 for testing. This didn't work as expected. Then shortly after I removed the card and not the drivers I started getting frequent BSODs again - 3 today. I tried installing an image I had backed up prior to installing the ThunderboltEX 3, but this doesn't appear to have resolved the problem. I'm inclined to think I may have a hardware problem because restoring it back to an apparently stable state does not have any affect. Any advice would be welcome.

I have three mini dumps from today can anyone help?

You seem to be experiencing the same thing a lot of people do with the original m.2 ssd launches. This is still a thing with newer ones somewhat but not as big of a deal anymore. What this sounds like to me is the ssd is having a hard time keeping it's 1.0.1.0s in order that is proper so data is being lost. Have you ram a health check on the ssd the won't always be accurate but will sometimes catch issues.

Access denied to all dump files. Be sure the files are publicly available for anyone and it doesn't require a login and repost the links.

Hi Gardenman,

I thought I had already done that - It's only the second time I have shared files on Google Drive. I've updated the link permissions and all the links should now be public.

Thanks for letting me know.

Hi White.A.Drew,

I have already run a full diagnostic scan using the latest Intel Memory and Storage Tool - nothing showed up. I have also run chkdsk c: /r /f on restart.

Is this what you meant or did you have something else in mind?

Thansk,

Nigel

all 3 crashes have same victim, csrss.exe which is the client server for your user, its the environment you use windows in. It crashes, windows is no use to anyone

You seem to have Bitdefender and Symantec installed at same time. that probably isn't a good idea. I would pick one.
A 3rd AV?

There is such a thing as having too many AV, they can trip over each other. You don't need 3.

I probably said this last time but any driver older than 2015 could be cause and you have a few

I thought I had already replied but I'm guessing the PC crashed again whilst I was writing it! I only started a new thread because the old one was closed.

Actions I have taken since you replied. I have gone through all the installed programs and removed quite a few, including some older ones, that I no longer require. I have done another chkdsk c: /f /r, SFC /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
One of the dump files made reference to dxgmms2.sys. So I used DDU to uninstall the graphics drivers and Realtek drivers and then re-installed them.

I still have to consider the list of old drivers you have identified. The IOLO drivers from Eldos are odd because I have uninstalled System Mechanic completely - maybe they have a tool to completely uninstall all the components.

I don't ever remember installing Bitdefender AV - unless it was an underload with another software package install, which I then later uninstalled. I tried searching for remnants with REVO uninstaller but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

I've looked up "bddci.sys" which I have described as a "BitDefender driver" in hopes that it was possibly used for other AV software but I'm not coming up with anything except BitDefender for that driver.

There's a couple of ways you can remove or disable this driver.
  • Use AutoRuns to disable the driver. You have to be careful with AutoRuns and not go disabling anything else you see listed in there. It's a very powerful application. AutoRuns doesn't require you to install it, and it's free from Microsoft's Sysinternals. Run Autoruns64.exe. Let it fully load then to go the drivers tab and disable (uncheck) bddci.sys then reboot.
  • Another option: https://techclassy.com/fix-driver-i...ysbddcisys_For_BitdefenderESET_Antivirus_User but be sure not to follow any of the other instructions on that page unless we recommend you do so.

Active Core has been crashing but not at same time as BSOD. its part of comcast - https://business.comcast.com/enterprise/products-services/activecore-software-defined-networking
considering how many AV you appear to have, I am not surprised.

Anyway, I leave it and see what Axe can find :)

Hi Colif,

Your comment went a bit over my head, sorry. What is Active Core in relation to the problems I am having?

As for AV
I choose to use Norton 360
I have Windows Defender switched off
I also have the AV solution for the IOLO package I use disabled
Have you spotted AV from something else as well?

I am intending to investigate the bddci.sys driver solution with Acronis. My first thought is that this will probably be reinstalled each time there is an update from Acronis True Image - they do say they will release a fix in the future...

The date of the article might fit with when I first started getting issues, but my life has been all over the place and I don't specifically remember when this first started happening - it seems like it has potential.

Thanks,

Nigel

Some parameters of the varying bugcheck codes are the indication why these crashes are all connected. If you look carefully, some of these parameters are 0xffffffffc000000e or 0xffffffffc0000006. These are so-called NTSTATUS codes that have the meaning (in order) 'STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE' and 'STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR'. This is translatable to the following, 'STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE' = a device was specified that does not exist, 'STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR' = a reference to memory for accessing data but the data is not there because it was not placed into memory due to an i/o error.

This all (including the crash dump generation failure and dump initialization failure) means that you want to have the focus on the storage and/or RAM as they're currently the most probable cause. Considering that you have quite a few drives, the first thing I would do is use CrystalMarkInfo to check the health of the drives.

Thanks I will get on this. As far as the memory is concerned, I performed a memtest+ overnight which completed the full test twice without any errors. I did this with both modules in place.

the blue links, not the green ones - https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

other scans you should try are
https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5363-sandisk-ssd-toolkit.html on your Sandisk drive
https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6075-corsair-ssd-toolbox.html on your Corsair drive
https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en&p=279 on WD 4tb
Not sure about the Toshiba, I think they got taken over by WD so you might be able to use that tool.

BSOD from 2nd August
2nd: 4
3rd: 4
4th: 7
5th: 2
6th: 2
7th: 0
8th: 6
9th: 1
10th: 5 so far plus 1x unexpected shutdown

So CrystalDiskInfo is a SMART information reporting tool? It doesn't appear to have any specific scanning feature. All disks show as "Good".

I have used the Intel Memory and Storage Tool 1.9.147 for my Intel 750 Series 1.2TB drive - it shows 92% Estimated Life remaining. I have run the full diagnostic scans on both partitions 100% OK.

I tested the WD Red 4TB HD and the 960GB SanDisk Ultra II SSD using the Extended Diagnostic test of the Dashboard tool, and both came back without any issues.

Toshiba don’t provide any diagnostic tools, so I used “chkdsk /f /r” on the Toshiba X300 6TB HDD – no errors were detected.

I removed the Toshiba HDD to do the chkdsk scan on a second system. The PC still BSOD'd a couple of times without it. I think the next step will be to remove one of the RAM modules and run it for a couple of days with one or the other installed.

So I ran the PC with one RAM module in slot A2. I continued to BSOD. I swapped the RAM module still in slot A2. It continued to BSOD. So along with the two runs of MemTest+ being clear it suggests that the RAM is not the issue.

A2 is now standard stand alone due to people having issues with after market cooler for cpus cover a1
I would like to believe you are correct but that doesn't really make sense... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
If the primary channel is A2 then why not rename it to A1.
Why not say in a manual that you can use either A1/B1 or A2/B2.
The manuals from ASUS are very specific that you should always use the second slots when you are filling a single channel.
If after market coolers are a factored issue why not design a motherboard to allow for that and move components that don't require access into that space?
Clearly that is the best answer because it is the only one given but...
