Question Random crashes with 7800 XT ?

Hello! I've had my 7800 XT for about a month now, I have a very strange issue where the GPU will just crash randomly.
I will be doing some random task.. just recently all I did was launch discord and it crashed. My HDMI monitor turns green and my DP monitor turns black. Requiring a force shutdown to be usable again. This happens so randomly that I cannot pinpoint any type of load causing it. Ive had Furmark running for 8 hours straight, no crashes. Ive had it up & running for 1-2 weeks straight without a crash, but then some days it will crash 4 times just doing the most menial task possible. Like watching youtube. Or doing anything at all.
Sometimes I will leave the PC on and return to it hours later (monitors are asleep) and I notice I cant get them to wake up. GPU has crashed again, just idling.

I dont understand why and it feels impossible to pinpoint, considering.. if it was a power draw issue, wouldnt it crash under heavy load like running furmark or some benchmarking program? It crashes when idling. So I highly doubt that's it.

I read somewhere that when running a HDMI+DP monitor that it can cause it, but it has crashed once while just having the DP monitor plugged in.

Other details:
- temperatures look very normal and healthy
- had a 2070 SUPER before this GPU that worked just fine, never had a crash with it. (had it for like 2 years)
Same system, just GPU is different now.

The specific GPU model I have is a XFX MERC 7800 XT.
Other mentions: this crash has occured on all the driver versions that have been released so far.
It has also occured on fresh windows install, the most recent crash was actually on a completely fresh windows install. I installed discord, launched it -> crashed.

Hey there,

Please list your full PC specs.

What bios are you running? Is the 7800XT overclocked in anyway? CPU OC;ed?
Full PC specs:
- ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-A GAMING (version: 2701, latest)
- 10600K CPU
- 16GB Trident Z Royal DDR4 & 16GB random memory modules I found (i had these running in combination with the 2070 SUPER and it worked fine) so 32GB total.
- Corsair AIO cooler, corsair case fans
- Corsair RM750X power supply (80+ gold)
- 2x samsung 970 EVO plus in RAID0 + 1x SATA SSD
- Windows 10 and 11. (crashed on both)

I think thats all, 7800XT is stock settings. I have tried the "auto undervolt" feature in their software, it crashes with or without it. CPU im actually a bit uncertain of, im 99% sure its stock though.

First thing to do is test the system with only the Trident, as they are a matched kit. Using other random dimms are a recipe to hunt problems that exist only because they are mixed.

Check with CPU-z what speed the 32gb is running at. Does it match the rated speed?

I will try that. Its just weird cuz its always worked fine with the 2070 SUPER.
They are running at 3200, which im pretty sure is the rated speed. I have the XMP profile selected in bios.

But I will try it with just the trident kit and report back if I crash again.

I had the EXACT same problem with my XFX RX 5700 XT Triple-Dissipation card. I never did find out exactly what the problem was (I assume that it had to do with the cards power distribution system) but I knew that it had to be a hardware issue. Drivers can't cause power-off reset crashes like you're experiencing. I had the same lime green screen and a buzzing sound from my speakers before it went dark. My PC required a physical reset after this, again, just like yours. When I removed the card and put my R9 Fury back in, all instability immediately ceased.

To XFX's credit, they upgraded my Triple-Dissipation to a THICC-III (more expensive model).

I believe that your card is defective and you should send it back for RMA.

It crashed again just now while playing WoW, only the tridents installed. 2x8 kit.

If this is the case, that really sucks.
I don't have a replacement card as to use meanwhile as I sold my 2070 when I bought this and I assume it would take weeks before I get anything back. I also dont have the original packaging left..

I'll look at their website for info regarding RMA though.

What have you got listed for Amd graphics power settings in Windows power plan?

Idea is to not let it down clock or power save during lite tasks. Could be driver related making card unstable under such environments. If you can adjust power to always prefer maximum performance, try that.

There were issues with earlier drivers, especially with multiple displays/refresh rates causing instability. Problems relating to power / stability during lite loads might not have been completely fixed.

Yeah, that does suck. I personally ALWAYS have a backup card for that reason. You could always buy some cheap GT 910 or some other kind of glorified video adapter to tide you over. I won't like though, it takes weeks.
