Question random stutter 6800xt

Hi, i have an annoying issue with my rig, essentially every game i play runs silky smooth but every once in a while a "cyclical" stutter happens and breaks the immersion completely, and to this day i haven't fixed it yet.

Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX AM4
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core
GPU: XFX Speedster MERC 319 CORE Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 280 A-RGB 68.9 CFM
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16
Storage: KIOXIA EXCERIA G2 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVMe SSD
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P500A D-RGB ATX Mid Tower
PSU: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX
Monitor: LG 27GN800-B 27.0" 2560 x 1440 144 Hz
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home 64-bit OEM - DVD


Things to note:

1. i am using an older gpu driver( but i don't think thats an issue since it has happened with all drivers, and i don't play recent games;
2. nothing is overclocked, except for the ram which is in xmp mode:
3. i use msi afterburner, but much prefer capframex now, so i use them simultaneously. Don´t know if there might be a software conflict;
4. i used blurbustersguide for capping my framerates (with riva tuner) and get a flat frametime line for the most part, except when the stutters occur;
5. freesync is on as is smart access memory;

What i want :

a basic "how to" or step by step on how to single out, pinpoint the root of these stutters, if you would be so kind😊

anyway i hope i was efficient with my words and hopefully i can get rid of this once and for all.

Ideally you need to use the most recent GPU driver to ensure it's not some bug from previous versions.

Then ensure you are using the latest system drivers, chipset, lan etc.

What bios are you currently running, it should be version 7C91v1F. Again this is to rule out the bios as the cause. Once the system is up to date, we can then assess a little better what might be the cause.

What power plan are you using? Reset them all by typing these codes into Power shell:
Ultimate Performance:
powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

High Performance:
powercfg -duplicatescheme 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c

Balanced:
powercfg -duplicatescheme 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e

Power saver:

You may have changed some of the settings in the power plans over time. These codes will reset them all to default.

hi thanks for answering, i am still a bit of a noob when it comes to pc gaming, do you mind telling me what i should do first? i heard bios updates to the mobo are dangerous and should be done only as a last resort

You're welcome.

I'd go this route:

1. GPU Driver - Download DDU, and use this app to complete remove your current GPU driver. This will be done in safe mode. Just follow the instructions when you open DDU. It's very straight forward. You can get DDU here: https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

2. Get the most recent Adrenaline Driver here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/prev.../amd-radeon-6800-series/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt simply choose the most recent, download the file, and start the process. It should only take a few minutes.

3. Open up a power shell instant, or command prompt. Simply copy and paste the codes above to 'reset' the power plans. Then try each new one to see if it has any affect on the stuttering.

4. BIOS update. Hmmm. Whilst this has the potential to be a problem, it's actually more akin to a driver update rather than a process that can brick your machine. Once you follow the instructions, it is fool proof (mostly). The benefit of doing a bios update is that it has the potential to fix all manner of issues. GPU related, mem compatibility, CPU performance enhancements among many other bugs.

Also, is your ram running in XMP mode? You can check this with CPU-z and go to the mem/spd tab. You can take a screen print and attach it here using imgur.

its hard to tell, there is no pattern. somedays it happens others it doesn´t. Its just a spike that breaks the immersion, like a hiccup

You don't have to be in safe mode when installing the new driver. You did it just fine.

No, you don't need to install chipset drivers first (but that won't hurt, and updating chipset drivers is important).
If your board offers the option *don't* attempt to update bios from within windows.

i have my destop mounted and in the video it says specifically that i need to have the mobo bare to do the update bios. i don't know how to disassemble the pc, is there a workaround?
Also, i thought i had updated the bios once after buying the pc, but it never involved the bios flashback button, i still remember using a usb stick, and i think i did it through the bios menu of the motherboard. is it possible i have bricked the mobo? everything turns on and seems to work perfectly aside from those sporadic random stutters.

What video says you have to have the motherboard "bare?" I've updated the BIOS on countless PCs, some of them with MSI motherboards, and I've yet to find one that required disassembling the PC to update the BIOS.

As suggested by @DSzymborski , no, you do not need to disassemble the PC.

If you didn't get a start up screen telling you to go to the BIOS, or 'press F1 to configure the bios', then it's likely the bios wasn't updated.

Also, note: After the bios update you need to clear CMOS on the mobo. This is normally done with a CLRTC button, or jumping to pins, which are marked as CLRTC on your motherboard.

Hmmm, I think I should hold my hand up here, and apologise. I linked the video containing the method of doing the bios through bios flashback. He does tell you the advice from MSI is to do it this way. However, in normal circumstances, that practice isn't practical. The videos were more for reference, and I should have explained that to you.

Have you put the PC back together?

It shows you where the 2 pins are that are required to clear CMOS. You must do this after your bios is updated successfully. If you don't clear CMOS you may still yet have problems. Essentially you short those to pins (normally they are marked 'CLRTC'). First take the CMOS battery out, then you simply touch both pins with a small flathead screwdriver. Wait 30 seconds, but the battery back in, reboot machine. At this point you will get a prompt to go back to the bios to reconfigure. Save and exit, and you should boot up.

i figured it out, i downloaded the wrong mobo bios by accident, now its fixed. As for clearing cmos, do i need to take the pc apart as well? like laying the tower or anything?
it seems the headers are under the gpu slot, its an xfx merc 319, so its kind of big

i am still at the part of clearing cmos, but to that do i need to remove the gpu? if so, how would i do it?
p.s: also today as i booted the pc for the first time an msi prompt poped up, wanting to install utilities and drivers. thats wierd, so i skipped it
