Re-install Windows XP?

Hello people,

i'm having trouble with using my Windows XP Home Edition for a couple of
weeks now. Using IE or Firefox takes a couple of minutes to load, same with
Words, some websites applications take minutes to finish etc.
My guess is to re-install XP and all the other basoc softwares like
Anti-virus, Firewall, Words etc. to it's initialsystem configurarton. I know
it's a kinda basic issue for every pc user, but it's a first for me. I have
scanned my computer a million times (literally), did an Ad-Aware scan (dito)
and have delete my temporary internet files aswell. They dont seen to have
any impact. Only thing left for me to do is re-install or the complete
system.

My simple question is what are the best sollutions for me to undertake and
what are the risks and issues i need to check before i actually go
reconfigurate my system?

You might tell us a bit more about your system.

How much Ram is installed, how big is your hard drive, etc.

XP usually runs best with about 512 Mb of Ram installed.

If your system only has 256 or less it will crawl like a snail.

Windows XP Home Edition, SP2
Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz
512 MB RAM
80 Gig memory

I undestand that the problem should be found in the system itself. I can
assure you though that the basic system that essentially was installed was at
an high level.
I think the problem lays with the fact that i'm an 'regular' websurfer.
Basically saying that my system got 'invaded' by an unwanted program. That's
why i want to get it back to it's first state.

First of all, note that he says the problem has been occurring
"for a couple of weeks now." Since it's a relatively new problem,
it's clearly not a hardware limitation, but a change that has
occurred recently.

Second, it's *not* true that "If your system only has 256 or less
it will crawl like a snail." How much memory you need depends on
what apps you run, but almost everyone needs at least 256MB for
decent performance. For some people, for example those who edit
large photographic images, more than 256MB--even much more--can
be required for good performance. But many people with only 256
memory do just fine with Windows XP.

CanonB, if you reinstall Windows, you might fix the problem, but
probably only for a short time. If you don't find out what's
causing it, it will likely return soon.

I hardly ever recommend reinstalling. If I were in your shoes, I
would suspect spyware, even though Ad-Aware din't find anything.
Unfortunately, no single anti-spyware program is good enough and
you need to run several for good protection. I would recommend
also scanning with Spybot Search & Destroy and teh Microsoft
Anti-Spyware Beta.

Your system is OK,

You might try a Disk Cleanup by double clicking My Computer,
Right clicking C: drive and properties,
Click Disk Cleanup,
Check all boxes under files to delete, and click OK.
You can also take a look at the more options tab.

Also go to the control panel and double click Internet options.
You can delete cookies, files(temp files), and history.

You probably need to defrag your hard drive also.
These are only suggestions, but will cure a lot of headaches.
Try these before doing a re-install.
