How can I re-order the drive letter assignments. I have Win XP w/sp2 and
2HDs and 2CDs and a floppy. When reintalling XP, the drives got re-lettered
so the 2nd HD is after the 1st CD letter. I would like it to be:

C: HD1
D. HD2
E. CD1
F. CD2

How can I do that?

Thank you

Hi,

As long as you are not trying to change the drive letter assigned to the
drive with XP installed on it (which you cannot do), click start/run, type
diskmgmt.msc and click ok. Right-click the drive to change the drive letter.
You cannot change the drive letter to one that is already in use, so you may
have to do a bit of fanagaling to get it the way you want.

Go to Start-Programs-Admin Tools-Computer Management then select disk
management under the storage folder.

This displays all your drives and gives you an option to change the drive
assignments.

One more thing - do not change the drive assignment for the disk containing
Windows or you will create a whole series of other issues you do not want to
deal with.

This is the typical drive lettering arrangement. You can change the second
hard drive but if it is a separate hard drive rather than a second partition
on your first hard drive then the assignment may revert after some future
reboot. I suggest leaving your assignments as they are. Mine, for example
are C: and G: due to intervening optical drives. Also, depending what is
already installed on the second partition, some programs may not find
customary files.
