Re-using components for an upgrade

Hi all,

I will be upgrading my system in the coming months, its been a while (I think over 5 years!)

Im currently running an AMD FX-6300, I managed to overclock this quite a lot, (stable at 4.5ghz on all 6 cores) so I guess that's why I have taken so long for an upgrade.

I will be planning to get the 8600K or possibly wait for the new line of 8th gen cpus to be released. I currently have a hyper master evo but will upgrade to a better air cooler.

Anyway, Ideally I would like to just upgrade mobo, CPU and RAM. My main concerns are the PSU and the case. (I have GTX 980 which will keep) The PSU is an Antec TP-550C. Its never missed a beat and as the newer components use less power I feel that should be sufficient, however do the newer mobos use the same connectors as my old one will? (currently gigabyte GA-970A-D3). Any valid reasons I should not re-use this PSU?

Also the case, its a basic one like this: http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/assets/aux_images/99093027G_20.jpg am I limiting any potential OC gains by not getting a case with better cooling etc or should it be fine? It sits under my table so it doesn't need to be pretty.

Connectors shown in the review look like it has all you will need.

The GTX 980 needs 500 watts or greater. Your okay there. You could get a better case. The one in the picture looks very basic.

that case will do okay, but it doesn't look to have a very good airflow path, I think if you are able to keep your temps under control now, then you don't have to worry about it.

The PSU will work, big worry is the GPU connectors, which you obviously have.

i5-8600k is a great choice, but you could look into an i7-8700 (non k) it's quite a nice CPU and compares to the i5 very well without having to OC/ mess around

The 8600k is 8th gen, there is no new line coming until late this year.

That PSU is fine, its a good one. The case is fine too you should be able to get a decent overclock, if your room has a high ambient temperature and if you want to push it to the max, you may need better airflow, and hence a better case. But something to deal with when you get there, if you get there.

The only problem with that case (I had one just like it) is that a better and bigger CPU cooler may not fit.
My old case couldn't even fit a Hyper 212, so I got a cooler with a 92mm fan. It was loud and barely adequate.
My nicer case fits a CPU cooler with a 140mm fan easily.

You could always go for a low profile downdraft cooler like the Noctua NH-L12S.

Great thanks for the reply. I have heard 8650k will be coming but not sure when or what its specs are to decide if its worth it. There's a few more i3 chips coming too

to answer your questions:
1. your psu is fine, it has the requisite connectors.
2. I think you will be limiting yourself with that case.
Any cooler needs a source of fresh air to do it's job.
$50 can buy you an inexpensive case that has at least two 120/140mm front intakes.

3. Your cooler is likely not good enough for a maximum OC.
It should be good enough to run initially and then some.

Upgrading from a 5 year old PSU would probably be a good idea, especially if you want to drive that 8600K as hard as it deserves and is capable of.

It will be the same as the 8600k with a base clock increase. Something you can do yourself with proper overclocking.
