Let's say that you had a PC thats always on, and has something on the order of a 5x250GB RAID5 array (1TB) and a gigabit ethernet.

Then let's say you wanted a quiet PC to watch some videos on your HDTV.

Now, for fun, you decide to spend $130 to get 4 CF to IDE converters and 4 1GB Ridata 150x (22MB/s) cards and make a 4GB RAID0 partition.

Now, it's quiet, it runs at 88MB/s and has virtually 0 chance of failure and can access a 1TB RAID5 array over Gig-E.

What is bad about this idea?

Not really a stupid idea at all. It's something that many firewalls have been achieving for a while. I think that a CF to PCI adapter might work well to (somewhat faster), depending on your OS that is. Some OS's might have trouble picking the drives up those drives. But hey, it's worth giving a try. Please share your results if you can.
