Really worried about my new i7-3770 temps

I installed the new CPU today. It's just the stock cooler, but I've used these Intel stock coolers before and have never had much trouble or needed to apply some other thermal paste. Theirs has always been 'good enough' I guess.

I'm idling around 28-35 depending on which core. I played Battlefield 4 for an hour or so and the hottest core got up to 68c, which itself worried me a bit. I'm coming from an i3-3220 that only ever got that hot in the peak of California summer heat playing the most intensive games.

I did a prime95 testing max load on the CPU, and sure enough the temps didn't stop there. The hottest core got to 86c, the rest around 81-83c. I know this can't be good at all, right?

One thing I noticed is when this is going on, I'm not hearing anything get louder. Unless I'm just remembering wrong, I could swear my i3-3220 stock fan ALWAYS got louder when it was under more load. The fan is WORKING, I'm just not hearing it speed up. Is there a way to test this while I'm running prime95 to ensure something isn't wrong there?

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.5, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces extremely high temperatures. The FPU test in the stability testing utility AIDA64 shows the same results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd and 4th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a 35% larger Die.

Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use only Real Temp to measure your Core temperatures, as it was designed specifically for Intel processors: Real Temp - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/real-temp-3-70/

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.5.

Thanks for your response. I ran the 26.6 version of prime95 and there is a bit of a difference. After about 5 minutes it topped out around 81c on the hottest core. https://i.imgur.com/ppdHc9z.png (I tried Real Temp, but it was just reporting the same numbers at CoreTemp, so I stuck with that)

It still seems a little too hot to me. Is this just because the i7 is going to run much hotter than I'm used to my i3-3220 running? Also, I have not done any sort of overclocking on this, so it's a bit strange that it's running at 3.7Ghz according to CPU-Z. It should be running at 3.4. I downloaded speed fan and the CPU speed (I'm guessing it was, it's the only one that changed under cpu load) is about 800 at idle and 1090 at full load. Is this the stock cooler's max speed, or is something wrong there as well?
