Hello,

Every time I am trying to install the Realtek AC97 on my Sony Vaio VPCL12M1E/S. And before the installation can be complete, I keep having this pop-up saying, "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software." I keep on clicking "Install this driver software anyway", and every 15 seconds after clicking on that it pops up again. I don't know how many times I had to click on that annoying pop-up. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I already got Realtek HD Audio. I'm trying to get my computer to pick up the microphone of my headset when I am using different programs like Audacity.
Please help me.

Thank you.

Stefan

I've done that and restarted the computer. I don't know what to do next after doing that as there's still no new sound device or Stereo Mix on my computer, and the volume buttons on my keyboard do not work after the restart, so I ha to do the Recovery to the point before changing the bits on the computer.

Cab this be another way, where I change my computer back to its factory settings that it could then install Stereo Mix and where it will find my external microphone, or where you need to know what kind of motherboard I've got so that I go to the site that could help me? I just don't know what else to do. I am so confused.
I am ever so terribly sorry for troubling you with all this. I appreciate you helping me. Thank you ever so much.

Hey, not a problem. I know it is frustrating, it often seems that Sony makes it harder than it needs to be with some of their devices and drivers.

That may work and is probably worth a try. The only advice that Sony gives is to enable the device in the sound recording tab. 🙁

OK. Thank you. I am going to try it.
I think I may know how to do it, but I just want to make sure how to set it back to its factory settings, and it says that it requires a Windows installation disc when there wasn't one in the package with my computer.
I just hope this will work, but I'm not going to give up until I finally get the drivers and for them to work with my microphone!

Many thanks!

Oh, and did you need to know what kind I motherboard I have?

No, it's an Intel P43 based small form factor board. I don't think that hardware is the issue, one of the Sony programs must control the ability of the microphone to show up in the sound recording tab; but since I don't have the machine in front of me I can't effectively troubleshoot that.

OK, then. That is fine.
So, just to be safe, how do I set my computer back to recovery settings, and where it says that it requires a Windows installation disc that didn't come in the package with my PC?

You can download a legit Windows 7 image from DIGITAL RIVER. Just be sure to get the exact same one you use except in SP1.

Use you Windows key that should be on a sticker on the machine if needed for anything.

Sony support has a troubleshooting guide if you Google your model number, if you didn't get that in the manual.

All of the ones are SP1s. I know you said to go for the exact one except in SP1.

Yes you want the same thing, except get the SP1. For example if you have Home Premium x64, get the Home Premium x64 SP1, not anything different like Pro or x86. Sorry if that was unclear.

The reason that you need SP1 is that you cannot do a repair install or many other things with an original pre-SP1 disk after the OS is updated to SP1 using Windows Update because then the disk you have is an older version and you cannot repair with an older version.

That is absolutely fine. Thank you for helping me out.
I have downloaded the one for Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and have also registered with Roxio.
So, what do I need to do next?

You need to consult your manual for Sony specific recovery procedures, they are laid out in detail. Now you have the installer disk.

Sorry, really can't give you any specific as I do not use Sony (or any OEM) recoveries, I always unpartition all partitions and do a clean Windows installation to the single remaining unpartitioned space so I don't have to deal with OEM software.

That is fine. I am looking through the manual.
What is it I need to do when I'm on the homepage of Roxio Easy Media Creator software after installing it? I'm really sorry. I feel really dumb.

I'm so sorry, but I am just finding this all confusing. I am so sorry! ><

Don't be sorry, it is all quite confusing. :) Just take it one step at a time and try to organize the problem into discrete parts that can be solved.

It gets easier with time, I've been building computers for 30 years and learned a lot through trial and error (many errors). I wish that I could help, but I just don't use that software and all my laptops immediately get a fresh Windows install.

Have you looked at this troubleshooting guide for your model: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/manuals/RecoTS/2010Q1_TRG_EN.pdf

Also, if you don't have a manual, here is the one for your model, although it has very little on sound issues: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/manuals/Desktops/VPCL12/VPCL12_H_EN.pdf

I have looked through and I think it makes sense from the manuals. I have already saved my precious programs and files onto a portable hard drive.
I'm so afraid that I still won't have any luck and would ask you if there is anything else I can do.

In addition to using a portable hard drive, put any really important stuff on something more reliable (dvds, another computer internal drive, a cloud storage). I say that because I answer a lot of threads on the storage forum about losing data from external drives, which can happen pretty easily.

What is the current status of your computer? Other than the mic issue, is everything else working normally now that you did the recovery?

As far as the Roxio, once you install it, I don't think that you need to do anything on their web site, since it is a Sony OEM version I don't think you need to register.

OK, then.
I haven't done the recovery yet as I'm so confused. Well, when I start up my computer, there are three short beeps. I looked about that on the internet and it says about it being a Base 64x RAM failure.

Don't worry. I think I have sorted it out. Thank you ever so much.
So, is it now OK to set my computer back to its factory settings after clicking on the bit where it says "Reinstall Windows-Requires a Windows installation disc"?
