I'm looking for a new, quality LCD monitor, must be 1600 x 1200 resolution. I'll be using it mostly for Internet + games. My graphics card is an Nvidia 7800gt (@480mhz). I live in the Uk and would appreciate all and any recommendations to assist in my choice of monitor, thanks.

None. At that resolution you can't get a refresh rate fast enough for games. Your best bet is settling for a 1280X1024 resolution with max AA and Antistropic set and get a 2ms LCD. The graphics will still be crisp and stunning, and your performance will be good too. Anything higher than 2ms won't cut it and you will be very sorry. If you play Counter-Strike or something like it, your performance will go waaaaaay down with an LCD running at that resolution. You will most likely have to enable V-Sync and watch your FPS get maxed out at 60 and wonder why you bought a good graphics card to begin with. Enjoy the blur!

I currently have an LG1710B (LCD monitor) which has a response time of about 12-16ms and it games perfectly well. My only disappointment with it is that it is 1280 x 1040 resolution. The type of games I play are mostly strategy games, which include the 'total war' series of games (eg. medieval:total war), and combat flight simulators.

In that case the Samsung 204B can match the resolution you require and has 5ms refresh. I suppose for strategy games you don't need the seriously fast refresh rate, but if you ever do venture over into the FPS realm you won't be able to make use of this monitor.

That review has it priced at $500. That is wrong. The price is more like $350, though it is sold out of places like TigerDirect and NewEgg.

ok thanks, from this initial review:

http://20-1-lcd-flat-panel-game-monitor-review.toptenreviews.com/samsung-204b-review.html

it looks good. I'll do a bit more research on it and any others that are recommended.

If you're mostly concerned with gaming, the Samsung 204B is the ONLY one with a TN panel, with potentially gamer speed.

If you want to consider all other aspects of a 20.1", UXGA monitor, suggest you check out the Planar PL2010M, Planar PL2011M, and NEC 2070NX.

There is not an abundance of low cost choices for this type of monitor.

depending on the game you play the 204B is not a gamer LCD. For shooters it is attrocious. The VX922 is a million times better. I own both so I should know. I actually bought the VX922 about 2-3 weeks after getting the 204B, because I simply could not use the 204B for HL2.

I wondered what 'GTG' meant, been seeing that quite a lot. So a monitor that just gives it's response time without any other indication of whether this is the best or the average or 'GTG' responese time, should be taken with caution? Also, what if I read a review about a monitor that I might be interested in buying, and the review just says that it is 'ok' for playing games, then it should be 'ok' for playing games?

Just out of interest, I found this comment made about my own monitor, back in August 2003:

I have the LG 1710B (as does my colleague next to me :D) and it simply rocks!!!

16MS response time, ALL cables inc in package (DVI, D-Sub, USB and power!) DVI and D-Sub, NO dead pixels and stunning IQ!!!

I ahev it connected Via DVI to a Rad 9500 Pro and it looks all good with clear type enabled absolutely no ghosting in Games or DVD's :D
"

I would tend to agree with them.

I have the 204B. Only major complaint is...

Backlight bleeding on the top & bottom edges, which in turn leads to poor spatial uniformity. In games and Windows it's unnoticable. But you can definitely see it in 16:9 movies. You can't see it in those screenshots that dude took, but it's there... trust me.

For gaming, I highly recommend this panel. For movies ONLY... I can't recommend it. For both movies and games, I recommend.

On new egg there are nearly 500 user reviews about the 204B. They were mixed reviews but most were favourable (5 out of 5 stars in many cases). The most common 'pro's' were (apart from the obvious big screen) no ghosting during games and bright, sharp colours. The most common 'cons' were dark at the top of the screen, light at the bottom and back light bleeding. It's probably down to the indivudual whether this bothers them or not. I'm not that fussy so it probably wouldn't bother me, I'm more concerned about having more screen space (I've usually got a few windows open at a time) and being able to play games on it. I have a tv sat right next to the monitor on the desk and I use that for watching films and tv on!

The most common complaint about the 204B seems to be that it is darker at the top and lighter at the bottom, do you find that to be a problem or is it hardly noticeable?

On my LCD it's bright at both the top and bottom. As I said earlier, it's only noticable in 16:9 movies and low light situations. Can't see it in games or Windows.

ok thanks, doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would bother me (I do more reading of text off the screen rather than doing anything with colours).

However my next concern is the fact that the 204B isn't HD ready! I'm not sure if this will be a problem, my understanding of HD is that it is used in films and tv progs to create a better quality picture. However, for watching films and TV programmes I have a TV sat right next to the computer monitor.

I've already ordered this monitor from an Internet company so never had the chance to try it out first. However I'm sure I won't be disappointed (unless there is a defect with it)

Yes I respect your views on this, it does sound quite bad. So when are people going to be required to upgrade to a monitor that supports HDMI? Will gamers be required to? If so, when? I forgot all about HD, I should of considered this before purchasing!

well I'm not sure when I'll be required to use a Blue Ray or HD DVD, hopefully not for a while. I mean, whats the point in a games developer publishing a game on a media type that only half the users are using.

The type of games I'll be using it for will be strategy games eg. civilisation and a few older ones like combat mission, together with some real-time strategy games like medieval2:total war, and also combat flight simulator games like maddox's forthcoming battle of britain game and knights of the sky (ww1 flight sim). I also might give 'world of warcraft' a try at some point.

All of those types of game have been fine on my current older lcd monitor, which purports a response time of 16 ms.

Anyway my monitor is currently stranded in paris as all the flights into london have been cancelled because of the fog.

ok I now have this monitor (samsung 204B) having received it earlier today, set it up and have been playing around on it. After some preliminary usage, I can only say that I feel I have totally spoilt myself! I always wanted 1600 x 1200 resolution and now I have it! It revolutionises and makes using a computer so much easier and more fun, no more having to be constantly resizing windows (because of the restricted screen space) and scrolling left-right and up-down. If the picture is good or bad, well I'm not really expert enough to tell, however it looks good to me. I've tested the monitor on some older games with mixed results, as many older games don't support such a high resolution, although generally the results have been favourable and the games are still playable (I may try resintalling combat mission to see if that clarifies the slightly blurred text [edit - this has now fixed the problem and the game looks great]). What I need to do now is test the monitor on some more modern games (although I don't really have that many, I plan on getting Civ4 and Rome:total war and possibly Galactic Civilisations 2 and also waiting on some combat flight simulators to come out).

However my delight at this purchase is tempered by the fact that it does seem that todays DVD's will be replaced with Blu-Ray discs, requiring HD compliant monitors. This may happen within the next 2 years, requiring a mass upgrade to HD compliant monitors. However until then, I intend to enjoy this monitor for as long as I can and will then certainly be in the market for a 1920 x 1250 HD monitor.

In the new year I'm upgrading from my current socket 939 Athlon 3500+ single core processor to a dual-core processor, which should bring further benefits.
