Question Recommended upgrade path ?

Dear Forum,

I need some advice.
So far my pc works great. Recently playing Remnant 2 with FSR on high.
FPS are 40 ish to 75
Without FSR it will be much worse.

Do you guys think it's time for an upgrade and if so. For which component?
This is my current RIG:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
GPU: AMD RX 5700-XT
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666 C16 2x16GB
MBD: Asus Z170 PRO GAMING

CPU is OC to 4.2Ghz

With a 6700k, that's not an upgrade. It's a new pc. New mobo, new cpu, new ram, new cooler? About the only reusable pieces are the gpu, psu, case and storage.

That's if the 6700k is what's holding you to 40-75fps. If it's the gpu that's holding you up, then new gpu and most likely new psu.

Which asks the question, what monitor? If it's on a 60Hz monitor, then that 40-75fps is just fine, 200fps isn't going to change much of anything because the monitor isn't going to show it, you won't physically see it, nothing other than the fps counter and it's imaginary improvement is going to change.

You are also playing on a preset. There's multiple cpu and graphical settings that don't do much visually but can have a huge affect on fps when lowered. Grass detail, clouds, ambient lighting are all big hitters, yet tend to go totally unnoticed by gamers. The cpu/gpu is taking up resources adding the shading, movement, amount of other details on the hairs on the targets mole, which you don't even see because you killed him 5 seconds ago and he's face down 200 yards away.

More likely, you have the itch to upgrade and want to know which component will bring the better improvement.
Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.

You need to find out which.

To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

Run the cpu-Z bench test on your 6700K.
You should get a single thread rating around 510:
Single thread performance is arguably the most important cpu spec for most games.
A i5-13400 which scores 715 would be a good upgrade.


If you need better graphics, make it a big jump or you may be disappointed if you do not see big results.
Tom's gpu Hierarchy chart can give you an idea of relative rankings of cards:
I would look for 4070 or 6800XT class upgrade.

What is the make/model of your psu?Your psu may limit you if it is not strong enough.
 
I am using 3 monitors from AOC with 75hz.
I usually game at 1080p on one screen as otherwise perf. would probably be bad (I assume)
 
Yes I am itching to upgrade and I am on the border of no/yes 😀
That's why I thought I ask for other opinions.

PSU is a corsair cs750m and cooler a cooler master V8

I will try out the lowering. I actually did not think about this. That's an amazing way to test!

Cooler is good, psu is not, it's 1 step up from bottom of the barrel.

You only game on the primary monitor unless you setup to game on all three using eyefinity, which is ok for some games but can easily be a gpu killer if the game isn't very well coded for such. You'd be looking at a resolution of 5760x1080 which is 6,220,800 pixels, 1440p is 3,686,400. By comparison 4k is 8,294,400 pixels. Figuring that, eyefinity on 3 monitors would be basically gaming on a 3k monitor. Doable, but brutal none the less on a low-mid grade gpu.

Try tailoring some of the cpu bound settings, stop using the presets on lower fps games. At 1080p, your games are running into cpu issues, not gpu issues for the lost part.
 
So I tried the suggestions
Limited cpu as far down as 30 and fps were about the same.
Change settings in Remnant 2 between low - med - high without FSR and with FSR
the Frames changed
no fsr
low 52-60ish
med 48-54
high 42-52

fsr was also always better but not as much

which indicates gpu is not strong enough for this game I guess?
I also turned off FSR and run openhwmonitor

To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

I suspect that you are somewhat balanced.
In that case, the easy thing to do is to first upgrade your graphics card and likely the psu also.

Actually, I would consider a monitor upgrade first.
Larger/wider 4k can be very immersive.
You would then be able to better assess the graphics upgrade needed.
