Recover files from dropped hard drive

Hello,
i dropped my external hard drive a couple days ago, adn when i went to plug it back into the computer it said it needed to be formatted. im wondering if the reason for this because i dropped it and may hav broken something, or is there another reason it would do this? im would like to know if there is any way to recover the files from it. it had over 300gb of data on it! if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Stop using this HDD. Take the HDD out of the external enclosure and connect it internally to the computer. See whether it reads the HDD.

If it is recognized, try using "RECUVA" - http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Data recovery services are very expensive.

Chances are you damaged it mechanically. That's the worse failure because it probably damaged the platters and heads. You will need to place a value on the data because it will cost you a lot even to try to recover it and there's no guarantee. Maybe you see the value of a backup scheme now.
